Back in 2012 I moved into my Grandparents home a few years after they had passed away. I spent a lot of time remodeling it. One of the first projects I did early on was to make a firepit in the back yard. I had a standard campground fire ring with an adjustable grate I ordered, then I build a cement block ring to contain the fire a little better

I lined it with Fire Brick, filled it with a layer of sand and also made a cooking fire deck with the fire brick under the adjustable rack.

I was pretty proud of it...

Now with the remodeling I've done, I've dismantled it and I'm considering reassembling it on a Paver patio I plan to put in on the north side

(Base and Drain rock there now)

My dilemma is that it will be about 12 inches from the fence which is now chain link, but I'd hoped to have something else in the future. Any ideas for a heat shield between the fence line and the fire pit? Thinking Masonry blocks are my only real option...

A sheet of corrugated "tin" (steel) barn roofing would be perfect. Frame it up and space it about 1-2" in front of your future wooden fence with good air circulation behind it. Keep it free of leaves, and you are good to go.

Have grilled many a rib eye over mesquite coals with a set up very similar to that 2rocky. Nice.

I used some old rusty steel roofing with a clearcoat behind my woodstove, and it looks great.

I would like to put in a fire pit in the new place but think something more portable would be more practical. Found this link on line that is kind of what I had in mind.

Any one have any experience with something like this?

You may want to leave the fire pit semi-portable until you decide on fencing.Corrogated steel will rust.

If starting from scratch, I like a fire pit with the top flush with the floor surface, rather than elevated walls around it like shown. If it's chilly outdoors and you are sitting around one with walls, your feet and lower legs are cold.

A couple other common things I see with fire pits:
a. Concrete bricks and blocks are pourus and will absorb water, the freezing, thawing and extreme heat around a fire pit will pretty quickly break them down.
b. Lots of the farm stores sell galvanized fire rings. Burning galvanized is a no no, as it creates toxic fumes, any experienced welder can tell you that. Probably not the best thing to cook marshmallows over.

Just my two cents.

thanks for reminding how good food was cooked when I lived back home in TX......:(
I worked in wyoming one summer at a dude ranch and was shocked at how bad the food lacks flavor up there.

Some day i'll move from Texas but I am going to have to figure out how to bring some Texas flavors with me.

Also, maybe I should get in the business of selling mesquite wood to poor souls in that part of the world. Just gotta stack it on a pallet and LTL it up there.

I have the same style pit. Recycled ring from when I was at Parks & bound for dumpster.
Still has the stakes attached, lost the grill & brace.I just use a couple rods & a grill, pulling coals under as needed. Very primitive. The fancy welded setup that I had I sold with my old cabin. It had crank up grill.
I also have same stove set-up for fire clearance with my stove as shown. I have the woodstove in a MH too. Safe & legal.
I was going to suggest corrugated roofing offset from fence. Radiant heat & windscreen perk....
