I've always considered myself to be in the middle of the pack as far as techno savvy. But, I have been struggling to figure out how I was going to stay in touch with Hunt Talk and the OYOA site, while on the road, filming. Not that I really like being tied to a site, but there are so many daily tasks that are required, I figured I better enlist help to solve the problem.
Having an engineering student home for the summer seems to have solved that, but with a look of disgust at how "untechy" the old man is.
Now, if I have cell coverage, this little HP Mini "Netbook" will have me tapped into the OYOA site, posting the day's events and uploading pictures. If nothing is posted, it is because we don't have cell coverage from camp.
Looking into a satellite arrangement to do this, but so far, the cost is over $1,000 per month. Until the sat cost comes down, things will have to happen via this small machine. Amazing, Verizon wants people to sign up for the wireless service, so you can get the machine for under $200, after rebate. The service is $60 per month, but as much travel as I do, it will probably be less expensive than other options I have used for answering emails, etc.
I really am not that excited about having to make time in hunts to take care of the necessary web issues, but I guess that comes with the territory of having a site.
We are talking to Panasonic about their Toughbook computers, which are stated to be usable in any weather and environmental condition known to man. If any of you use such a machine, I would like to hear about it, good or bad.
