I've always considered myself to be in the middle of the pack as far as techno savvy. But, I have been struggling to figure out how I was going to stay in touch with Hunt Talk and the OYOA site, while on the road, filming. Not that I really like being tied to a site, but there are so many daily tasks that are required, I figured I better enlist help to solve the problem.

Having an engineering student home for the summer seems to have solved that, but with a look of disgust at how "untechy" the old man is.

Now, if I have cell coverage, this little HP Mini "Netbook" will have me tapped into the OYOA site, posting the day's events and uploading pictures. If nothing is posted, it is because we don't have cell coverage from camp.

Looking into a satellite arrangement to do this, but so far, the cost is over $1,000 per month. Until the sat cost comes down, things will have to happen via this small machine. Amazing, Verizon wants people to sign up for the wireless service, so you can get the machine for under $200, after rebate. The service is $60 per month, but as much travel as I do, it will probably be less expensive than other options I have used for answering emails, etc.

I really am not that excited about having to make time in hunts to take care of the necessary web issues, but I guess that comes with the territory of having a site.

We are talking to Panasonic about their Toughbook computers, which are stated to be usable in any weather and environmental condition known to man. If any of you use such a machine, I would like to hear about it, good or bad.

Nice arrangement. I am looking into a system I saw that lets you use wireless to tap into my office computer to edit and print or send maps to my clients. Keep it Dry! John

This will do that, with a VPN connection, which my son informed me stands for Virtual Private Network. Actually, I have been doing that on my big laptop for almost two years.

Our CPA firm is thinking of taking our two servers and moving them to a virtual network, or a "cloud" as it is called, so employees can tap into the "cloud" any place where there is a web connection.

Not that I know what all that means, but it sure sounds cool. :D

This is great!! Randy won't be able to escape my tax questions right during the hunt:D How can I get tapped into this cloud?;)

Don't know anything about it but I have heard that the toughbook is a hot item of the troops overseas, apparently it holds up well to the sand

Cool, I always new you were a techy in Montana clothing.

Any way to tap into real time satellite images, zoom in on the big one ? Get coordinates to plug in to a GPS ?
Sorry, I’m getting ahead of myself, the Texas hunt isn’t until next year.

I've been around a few toughbooks through school and/or work and they are as advertized. 'Course, they are quite a bit larger, heavier than the net book.

Fin, I will have to check into that. Having started out my Drafting career as a Pen & Ink person these last 12 years are something I saw on the Jetsons! LOL John

some of my buddies here in AZ have been using the verision servise for there lap top,

seems they can be out fishing and still do there work while on the boat, I never looked into it but one of my buddies had a dell pc and a celphone card for it and was online while we were fishing a night tourny 2 years ago, it was pretty cool.

At least he said it was verison and a celphone card/attachment.

That was another option. Verizon (and many of the other service providers) also make cards that plug into a pc card or usb slot and will allow you to access the internet the same as with the small laptop in the pictures. The small laptop is convenient because it it very light, has a very long battery life, and is capable of doing everything he needs to keep up with the website while he is away.

with a celphone card like that you still need to have cel service correct? unlike a sat. were it will work anywhere.

I like that little laptop its pretty cool, I wouldnt have a use for it , or would I lol.

I still have an anolog cel phone, Qwest terminates it in 3 weeks, I dont know anything about cel phones expect the bill , My daughter says go with verison which is what qwest uses now.

I dont know how to text , but the picture options are pretty cool. got any reccomendation?
would like a min of 3000 mins -unliited

ACS CELL phone coverage on the North Slope of Alaska

I just started using a cell phone card from ACS, which is more-than-likly from Verizon since my new phone is Verizon with a ACS bill.
Working good in ManCamp in oilfield. Slow pulling up stock graphs.
Kuparuk Oil Field - 1300 miles from the true North Pole.
Three polar bears where around last week.

So where are the updates from the NV deer hunt? ;)

Just walked in the door from the hunt. Updates to follow.

Sorry, but was an hour and a half from the nearest cell coverage. Need to find a reasonable and reliable way to do the satellite connection.

As I discovered, we are only as hi-tech as the connection we can get to, which in NE Nevada, is not very good. :D
