Has any one else read the article Return To Scout Ridge in the September Outdoor Life? Pretty interesting recap of a fatal run in between black bear hunters and a grizzly that happened in 2011 on the Idaho-Montana line. Wounded griz attacked a hunter, who was killed by an errant bullet shot by his hunting buddy. Bullet had both bear and human DNA on it. Besides a fascinating story, it's a bit of a mea-culpa by Outdoor Life, which had run a fairly sensationalist story about the encounter shortly after it occurred. It seems to me a pretty stand-up thing for OL to do. Anyway, worth the cover price, IMO.

I have read it. I feel terrible for the surviving hunter knowing his bullet was the cause of his friends death, when all he was trying to do was save the guy. I hope OL learns a lesson with this story...not to judge or predict what might have been. To take this thread one step further, I would like to see all options to leave comments for stories, news articles, etc. removed. That poor guy not only has to live with his friend's death, but also has to be subjected to everyone's biased opinion on how the situation should have been handled. OL needs more stories like this and less of how to make a gun sling from five miles of parra-chord and two bottle caps.

I think part of the problem with on-line comments is that they are anonymous. That provides cover for a certain type of person to blast people without accountability for their words. Cowards.

I read it yesterday and thought it was pretty good. I'm glad that there were no charges filed in the end. He was an experienced hunter and sometimes mistakes are made. It is punishment enough knowing that your bullet ultimately killed your friend. He is a young kid and has to live with that for the rest of his life.
