It’s O-Towns first year hunting elk. I was excited to get him on the hill. I went up with a buddy Neil as well. My dad came down from Challis and went out with us just for the opening morning. Knowing where 3 bulls were hanging out due to Wylee that spotted them the week before we were anxious to lay siege to them !!

2 other Groups of friends were hunting in the area as well. Kotters/Lee’s (5 in the group) and Warren's Nephews (depending on the day 3-6 of them). I also knew of 2 other guys down the road as well. The area had no shortage of people we knew.

With 15+ people hunting the area we knew there would be some packing … so we headed up the hill early on opening day. My dad, being 66 is slowing down a little and told Neil, O-Town and me to press ahead and he was going to be behind us. As we got up to the top of the hill ready to turn up the canyon, 4 guys on Horses passed us. Crap…. But what do you do, eh J

I told the other two I’d find more elk for them and we sat down to glass. As soon as the 4 guys got around the corner 10 shots rang out. I’m sure they got the elk Chris had spotted out for us……

Glassing across the next canyon I spot another herd of Elk. We decide to press forward after them. I didn't bring my spotter but there was bound to be a bull... right ?!?!?!

At this point… We had already gone 2.08 miles and About 1800 feet elevation. We opted to leave and go see if there was a bull in the herd. We dropped down 1,400 feet and climbed back up 700 Feet on the other side to find the bedding elk. about 600 feeet from the top of that ridge. Oscar and me hung tight and sent Neil around to get above them into a Sniper position so we’d have all the angles covered.

Shortly after Neil left….. I saw a bull !!! It wasn’t a big one but I centered it up in the scope and said “BANG” in my mind J

Over the next 8-10 minutes or so I tried getting O-Town lined up. It was a 324 yard shot from where we were. I had it killed many times in my head looking through the scope but I wasn’t going to tag it and I knew Neil would be in position soon if O-Town didn’t get a perfect shot. I got a BAckpack for him to rest on and moved brush but every time we tried to get set up the dang elk would move.

Soon after “BOOOM” a single shot from above and the elk was downed by Neil. The other elk didn’t know the direction of the shot and like we thought, and they came single filed by us. We steadied our guns on a tree and watched as a dozen elk filed by us. One of the big cows leading had a Radio Collar on her neck but no other Bulls in the group.

Although Osc’ was bummed he didn’t get it, He was real happy for Neil and we at least had meat to pack out !!!

The pack out from where we were wasn’t any easy feat. We were 3.5-4 miles back to the truck. We were 2 canyons plus away from our start so opted the “Shorter route” at almost 2.25 Miles looping to the Highway. With me carrying 2/3rds of a deboned Elk and Neil carrying 2 guns and the rest of the meat and items we had.

On the way out, I stopped on a ridge and glassed some new country and saw several dozen Elk about a mile away. I knew we had a new game plan for the following day. Unfortunately with Neil taking a Spill he tweaked his knee and I had to bring him back to town Friday. It was nice to sleep in and Eat a good breakfast at the Lodge !!

Out of all the guys we knew….We had the only elk from all the groups. Although not a big one, it was Neil’s first elk and we were stoked !!

Friday night we sat down with Warren that came up that night. I told him about the Elk I spotted the Night before and we put together a plan. I was going to take my boy upthe left canyon and glass the side he was on the right where I had seen the elk prior.

1 hour into daylight I had the Spotter on a 5 point bull !!! I told Warren one was on his side and we were going over that direction as well. I knew the elk were moving but over the next 30-45 minutes O-Town and me never stopped pushing up the hills through brush and sweating buckets. OK… I was sweating buckets and he was just following along. Although I was packing both guns and all the items like a Caddy playing golf, as far as we were going and went I didn’t want him to get burnt out being only 12.

We got up to the Elk and saw 3 cows disappear to our right. We slowly headed up the hill again when the Shots rang out 3 ridges to our Left. 2 more shots followed. We turned on the Radio and Warren let us know he downed the 5 point.

We got to an opening and were glassing in case there were any more bulls or elk got pushed back to us with no luck. So we started to cow call and waited…. cow call and Waited…. From Behind us I heard a Stomp as seen some brush move and told Oscar to grab the gun and follow.

It all happened so fast but I squared the gun on the bull and told Oscar to shoot. He was coming behind me and didn’t even know it was a bull. He worked around but the Elk turned through the bushes to disappear so I let him have it.

I didn’t feel like I won a Daddy of the year awards. 2 days of hunting, getting him close to 2 elk but him never getting a shot off. But I was glad he was with me.

So by our 2nd day of Elk hunting, out of 4 tags, 3 were filled. The other groups were sitting at 0 still.

Packing out Warrens Bull today I took O-Town up the hill a little and called some Bulls in. Well, they came within 400 yards. There was an 8" spike in the group which Osc' said he wouldn't have killed even if it was closer to us.... ;)

Although non of our Elk make any type of “book”, they do make great memories.

We were able to get my elk out Sat and spent Sunday taking out Warrens. One of Warrens Nephews came in to help pack out. We had a “FUN” time….. If being sore is fun !!

Although he didn't pack any meat out, he was on our heals all the time and willing to do whatever it took to get a Bull. Unfortunately it didn't happen this week.... but there is still more time. He is already planning how many more days of School he is going to get to miss. With a 4 point grade average I figured he could miss a few days for the opener and learn a lot of new stuff Thursday and Friday this week.

His hunt to be cont., He still has a deer and elk tag in the pocket .............. :p

It seems like most of the Bulls we get out of the Sawtooth have some Viagra Issue browtines. It's usually just the one side. Mine this year looked like it crossed with a Big horn ... ;)

Every year we talk about how hard the hunt is jsut to kill crappy bulls. But we know the area and there is always a bull willing to die if we're willing to hike in for it.

I've never seen s droopy browtined mature bull though.... Although my experience with the mature bulls is limited :p

what kind of a guy would shoot a bull out from under his 12 year old son? ;)

Great st ory, nice array of photos and cool looking elk! Congrats!

WTG, That is laying the Smackdown on some Elk! Tell O-Town that some Crazy Cajun has sent him a "Good Luck" charm. Just follow the instructions and he is gonna kick your Butt! John

Wow! Busy weekend. O-town is having a great time and learning a lot! He will get his chance! Congratulations.

Very nice!! Congrats on a good hunt! Regardless of him pulling the trigger, he'll remember that weekend for a long time. Was this in the 'kitty litter' area?

Congrats to everyone. Oscar will get his chance. Pretty amazing he made it the whole way with you. He definitely has the determination.

Very cool Oscar. Thinking O-Town needs some Karma sent his way.

Hope he finds a great bull and make his old man proud.

Congrats to you Moosie, for taking the time to get him so involved in hunting.

Took me 7 seasons to get my first first, after that they have come much easier. Tell O-town to keep it up, he will get his chance!

Awesome! Good job on doing your best with your son, tying to get him shot opportunities. I am sure seeing his dad get a bull was pretty danged exciting as well.

Nice pics, as well.

Congrats on a great weekend Oscar! Just out of curiosity what do you have Little O "running"?

By the way...When are you going to match warren with the suspenders? We have seen you with everything else....but suspenders are cool!!
