I was selected for a unique hunt this year. It's a population control hunt on some limited entry public land. Does only with an 8 deer quota for myself and guest this weekend.

This morning I decided to hunt old school. No stands, no blind, just me and my old rolling block that was built in 1867. I lucked out and an old girl gave me a shot at 75 yds, with was my limit with it's old iron sights. Had to use the second leaf for that range.

It really is good to forget antlers and just go back to your roots. 1st time I've hunted like this since I was a kid. My friend is hunting with a flintlock this morning, so fingers crossed for him.

Congratulations! I like the pine branch on the deer's side. I have been reading a little about European hunting traditions and plan on incorporating some of them into my hunting (if I'm able to get a deer anyway!).

Good Job!

This is one of my favorite things. Leaving all the fancy gear at home a going out with just my old 1894 and a belt knife.

Adam, I have been on several European hunts and have found them to be extremely interesting. They are usually comprised of several ‘guns’, dogs and pushers, while hunters are mostly designated to stands. There is much respect given to game taken, a pine bough placed in the corner of the mouth, hunting horns blown to give respect, big ceremonies.......!

Cool looking rifle. If it ain't broken don't fix it! Neat to see old guns like that still can get it done.
