One of many benefits of Montana is multiple deer tags. While many hunters like the challenge of a calculated long shot with modern cartridges, range finders and sophisticated scopes, it is fun to go backwards and use the old 19th century firearms.

I really wanted to get my moose with a Winchester 1876 in 45-75, and continue that tradition with an original Winchester, but conditions didn’t allow it. The deer were more accommodating and I was able to get a doe Mule Deer with a Charles Clark double rifle in 7X57 flanged, a doe Whitetail with a Colt Lightning in 50 Express and a buck Mule Deer with a Winchester 1895 in 38-72...

I had a similar thought this past weekend and pulled my grandfathers 30-30 out to use it. I am pretty sure this gun had not been shot since the 80's when I was using it pretty regular as my hunting rifle. And when I say not shot, I mean not shot at all, no sight in or anything. Figured it was sighted in then, should still be right. It worked out okay.IMG_2147.JPG

I have an old Carl Gustafstads Swedish Mauser built in 1911 in 6.5 x 55 Swede with a very good peep sight. I've always wanted to take it out. My buddies and I are talking about doing a vintage rifle mule deer hunt next year for a fun challenge. Should be pretty fun

Start making those plans now and it will make the hunt next fall that much better. The quest for “inches” has hurt the hunting industry and made an unrealistic need to shoot big deer.

No one wants to shoot a big buck more than I, but I will always take the smaller buck with a classic rifle if I can. I still have the 300 WBY if I did see the monster buck with no way to get closer, but I still like the old guns best...

i love old guns as well , I feel a sadness when I go to gun shops used rack and I see these rifles and shotguns . I think of the years of service in the field and at one time someone’s pride possession. Great post by you your out there getting in done. Impressive
