Spent last week backpacking into a fairly remote area of New Zealand looking for red stags. Had great weather and saw 50+ deer but no shooters. As you can see from the photos the country is very open so seeing deer isn't difficult and its actually easy to get around, except the distances are big!

Next hunt is down near Queenstown for the fallow rut, late April, for a week with my son.IMG_4418.jpgIMG_4432.jpgIMG_4435.jpgIMG_4474.jpgIMG_4409.jpg

Amazing country! Ditto Seeth07's comment.

Best to your son and you on your fallow hunt.

Curious, are they native or brought over?

All big game was brought over to NZ - tahr, chamois, pigs, goats, deer, wallaby and lots of game birds too.

Very cool! Of those, any turned varmint / excess? Or have they conditioned to measured #'s?

I take it feral pigs?

That’s opening up a big can of worms lol

We don’t have any proper game management to speak of, so it’s not really a case of excess or managed numbers. If DOC think the numbers are too high they will cull them e.g. the recent tahr cull. All game animals are also commercially hunted and poisoned by 1080 (as by kill).

Yes, lots of pigs.

Not too happy the borders do not open until after the roar! Seems as though they are shooting some awesome stags. having a year to grow due to pandemic closing last years roar.
