Can anyone tell me what unit 21A in new mexico is like?? I've researched it a bit, but just not a lot of info out there. Draw odds are better then the neighboring gila units and success rates are not much worse. My favorite part is 98% public land :D What I don't know is what type of country it is. I have looked on google earth but as a flatlander from montana I have a hard time distinguishing what is rolling hills and what is steep and nasty ha! My two main questions would be how rough is the terrain and what the road access is like?? I can see that 21B has a lot more private and 16b has very little roads, so my worry is getting to the different point in 21A. Thanks for the help!!

The wilderness is steep and nasty. But you need to be comfortable in the mountains. Lots of ups and downs in 200-300 ft canyons. It can be a tough unit in the forest. But there are good numbers of animals. And you can usually get a deer tag for the unit too. Archery seasons overlap. But again, be in shape. And plan on backcountry camping if possible to get away from road pressure.

Road access is minimal. There are a few roads that go in from the east but not too many. Some ATV trails near the divide off the hwy. but those peter out after a few miles and it becomes illegal beyond a certain point. Then of course there’s the wilderness.

So, there is not too much access which is a good thing.

There are unmarked tanks and other useful feature you can find if you carefully scour Google Earth. I also recommend noting the elevation of your cursor in the bottom right of the screen. 200’ rolling hills may sound benign but it can wear you down all day in burn scars and without trails.

Best of luck.

That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for, thanks so much!! Sounds like it may be a little more rough than I would like, or I should say what I am accustomed to. Will certainly keep it on my list tho!!
