My hunt opens Oct 20 and is 5 days muzzleloader. I have accrued several hot summer days of scouting in the unit focusing on the southern end, in and around the Apache Kid Wilderness due to its remoteness and ruggedness. Unfortunately I haven't seen much in the way of elk or elk sign in the area. History has proven there are big bulls in the wilderness area but everything I'm seeing is pointing to the majority of the elk being at lower elevations near the private land. I plan on sticking to my guns and hunting the "unpressured" rugged terrain up high in the wilderness area but was hoping to get some clarity as to whether or not I'm on the right path or if I need to broaden my search...also looking at the west slope of the magdalenas. I'm trying to avoid being the fool hunting the high country when the sign shows the elk are down low in the pinon and juniper. Seems to be more consistent water down low in the cattle country lowlands but I would imagine pressure is tenfold of that in the backcountry. Any input or stories of past experiences in the unit isGREATLY appreciated. Thanks

I have heard the elk like to feed way out on the flats at night and move back into the PJ for the day. It does look like there are more tanks down low. Thats a tough time of the year to hunt bulls, they're probably pretty beatup from rutting. In my experience bulls summer and winter in different areas. Up high is a good plan, look for sanctuary. In a unit that size it might be a good idea to stay flexible. Spend some time with OnXmaps or Game Planner Maps and pick out a few spots.

Find water. That will be the major need in this unit that is limited.
Then find a spot between said agua & one of those nasty canyons.
This could be 10 miles apart so there is lots of room.
