My hunt opens Oct 20 and is 5 days muzzleloader. I have accrued several hot summer days of scouting in the unit focusing on the southern end, in and around the Apache Kid Wilderness due to its remoteness and ruggedness. Unfortunately I haven't seen much in the way of elk or elk sign in the area. Everything I'm seeing is pointing to the elk being at lower elevations near the private land on the west side of the San Mateo Range. I plan on sticking to my guns and hunting the "unpressured" rugged terrain but was hoping to get some clarity as to whether or not I'm on the right path or if I need to broaden my search...also looking at the west slope of the magdalenas. I'm trying to avoid being the fool hunting the high country when the sign shows the elk are down low in the pinon and juniper. Seems to be more water in the cattle country lowlands but I would imagine pressure is tenfold of that in the backcountry. I know much how much things change from July to October and I liked my plan until I started scouting...not so sure now. Not looking for anyone's spots just a little guidance or stories of other hunts in the unit. Any input is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks
