New CWD Positive deer near SD/MN Border

Hot off the press--in MN up against the SD border--CWD positive from hunter harvested deer. Hate to see these popping up where no other known positives are closeby--which is the case in both MN and SD--but I dont know if SD tests as much as MN does. Hopefully it's an isolated deer and they can cull some locals from around where it was shot to gauge whether it's established yet. No word on whether it's close to a game farm--which would be a likely explanation. Most --but not all--of MN's positives have been thought to be of that origin.

Easy, they'll put unlimited doe tags for a few years to try and wipe out the herd. That's what they've done other areas...

That's pretty much the textbook, knee jerk reaction in my experience. Unless you live here then the dnr hires sharpshooters on top of unlimited tags.

We haven't had sharpshooters to my knowledge, but I wouldn't put it past them! I wonder how much they'd pay a sharpshooter. I'd gladly do the shooting for them lol

Well that doesn't sound very sporty. Scratch that idea. I was more along the lines of a guy that just shoots a bunch of deer by hunting.

That sounds like a turkey shoot! They should at least test the deer and donate the meat...

It's crazy how wanton waste doesn't apply to the gov.

MN HAS used sharpshooters at times.

They DO test all the deer shot--whether by hunters or sharpshooter.

Those killed by sharpshooters--They CAN"T donate the meat until tests come back. They do at that time if the test is negative.

The most aggressive culling I have seen in the state was during the Bovine TB outbreak in the NW many years back.

They hit deer hard then.

Hunters up in arms.

Needlessly-- In a year or two deer numbers were right back.

More often than not it's just some initial sharpshooting or testing requirements then hunters are allowed a bit more freedom to take multiple deer. Sometimes during special seasons.Can't eliminate deer and that's not the objective--the objectives are to test liberally and get an idea of prevalence, if high then keeping population lower could come into play.

The news release today said 98 percent of the hunters taking part in the SE special CWD control hunts take no more than two deer--and there aren't many that hunt in these hunts. No herd decimation is occurring.

We do NOT want to be Wisconsin!

There, professional wildlifers were ignored by politicians. Their advice was ignored. Game farmers--linked to the problem direclty in many cases--had legislators ears. Politicians there also supported the rabid hunters who didn't know reality.

The result--HIGH incidence of CWD in many places--way too late to gain any control. CWD hits mature shooter bucks especially hard--they don't get that old anymore.

Do you hunt in areas that had unlimited doe tags for a few years? I've witnessed the result of it first hand. When doe numbers tank, deer numbers tank as a whole. It's not something that comes back next year, it takes a few years to start establishing a healthy herd again.

In one of the areas I hunt, there was 1 deer from a deer farm that had cwd. They then made it a cwd zone and ran unlimited doe tags for 3 years. $2.50 per tag. No one killed a deer with cwd that year. So they did it for 2 more years...

We had a deer test positive from a deer farm and they did NOT run unlimited doe tags. They followed the CWD plan and increased testing and banned deer feeding and attractants. No other deer turned up with CWD and within a couple of years they lifted the restrictions. Not a big deal and I am glad they are on top of it. The CWD plan is a pretty good plan in my opinion. You cannot ignore the disease. I read in one news story they do not plan to have a special hunt this year in that unit. Next year they will likely do a lot more sampling. I really wonder if there is a deer farm near the spot it was found. The DNR was pretty tight lipped about where that was in my area.

they do donate the meat, at least in MN. I was part of that program a few years ago coordinating the distribution of the meat. Every deer they cull gets tested, and they're hanging in a meat locker or refrigerated truck until the results come back. Any positives go to the incinerator at the UofM, any negatives get distributed.

There are sharpshooters in MN that do it. You can see the totals on the CWD results page. Anything under "agency culled" is done by sharpshooters, and it's a pretty insignificant number in the grand scheme of things.

I hunt one of the hotspots, I've had a positive on my farm, and have dozens of positives within a mile or so since 2018. We haven't made a DENT in the population, and we've had essentially unlimited tags (5 deer, plus early antlerless) for 25 years. We begged the DNR for years to give us cheaper tags so hopefully more people would shoot another doe or two. Now that they're cheap, hopefully the harvest picks up a bit, but I doubt it since it's so much private land and too many people worried about "their buck".
