There is a quieter option that still reduces recoil Magna-port. It is not nearly as effective at reducing recoil as a more open brake but does balance noise and recoil.
If you hunt packed in a group a brake isn't the best idea. My preference is to be on my own while hunting big game even if that is just a ridge away from hunting partners and that means I'm only going to bother my hearing.
For hunters who want lots of oomph in a light rifle they make a big difference. Hearing protection is mandatory at my range and I like plugs and muffs even for unbraked rifles. In the field I don't wear hearing protection most of the time, my risk, but I'm sure my hearing is less than great.
