The afternoon started off with him grabbing the dog, loading the mountain bike into the truck and heading off into the hills for a good ride and to move tools into deeper into the mountains to work on shelters...

After the truck was unloaded and the dog was making his usual runs around the truck, he looked into the mountains. There were fog clouds hanging low and the tops of the hills couldn't be seen. A feeling of life started to fill him as he hoisted the mountain bike over the fence for his long treck into the back country.

The winter had taken it's toll on his legs and the ride up the steep hill ended way sooner than anticipated and the bike as pushed most of the way up the road. Stopping along the way, he snuck off into one of the underground shelters that he had built the season before and pulled the digging tools out. The air was crisp, even though the ground was wet and held the warmth of the week before.

On up the small mountain road he pushed the bike, as the dog searched out every bush, stump and rock along the way, pulling in all of the smells Mother Earth has to offer that only he is able to revel in.

Finally getting to the heavy snow in the road, he abandon his bike loaded his tools into his pack and headed up the mountains, following the South facing rock slides that have been warmed by the sun over the winter and melted the snow so as to make a path half way up the mountain.

Climbing thru the maze of rocks and downed trees strewn over the landscape, he finally gets to the point where the snow hasn't melted so far yet, the snow has started to settle in over head and is quickly covering the ground. Setting the tools in a good place for the next time he is going up to take them farther on their path to the top, he turns and heads back down the mountain.

A few hundred yards down the hill, the ground starts to vibrate and rumble, as if one was caught in a mild rock slide, you could feel the vibrations running thru your feet and into your knees, this went on for a moment and then finished off with a great thunder clap right over his head. Momentarily startled by the experience, he felt as if the spirits were telling him, this was a powerful place and that he would some day have to stop long enough to answer their mighty call.

Making his way down the hill to his trusty little mountain bike, he started on a head long race with his canine budy close behind. The road by this time had small streams running down it and the snow that was around in patches was becoming very wet.

By the time He got back to the truck, he was covered from tip to tail with mud and his hands were blocks of ice. The drive home was very unpleasant with the deep cold that had settled in clear to his bones.

Once in the door, he quickly stripped and jumped into the shower, the hot water running across his cold hands felt as if some one had slammed all ten fingers with a hammer. Once the pain was gone, the hot water slowly took the cold out of his bones and he felt whole again...

This story is about my little adventure into the mountains yesterday...

I did, by the time I got home, it still wasn't warm yet, this place where I start is only a couple miles from the house...

I usually never take a camera into this area, it isn't beutiful like Bills and a few others that post pics of their stomping grounds. Just plain looking hills. That is why I believe that not to many people if any-any more frequent this area. The scenery isn't breathtaking and it is just to long a walk for the rest...LOL... I will go down today and find some pics of places I've been and some of the things I've done outside of fires and start getting my photo album filled up....

I do have some great pics of some great places...
I also don't have a digital yet and when I do take pics, they have to be developed and all the usuall stuff before I can even see them. This summer will be my year for a camara...I need another one any way, the fires ruined my last good camara, some thing about being to close to to much heat makes the film turn orange and the camara will finally just quit working...I have been looking at that Olympus 400, they are supposed to be dust and water resistant. For the money and size, they better be....

That photo was taken about 3 years ago in early summer in the Hoback Canyon, region H. It was my first trip up there and I loved the ride. I have been up there several times since and have seen lots of elk, deer and moose in there. During hunting season, it gets hit pretty heavy, mostly by residents because it is wilderness area. On the other side of those mountains is region G, The Greys.
