We struck out in WY, so we are planning an archery elk trip to MT this year. I have read a lot about how good the general tag is in MT, so we will give it a try. However, we might as well try for a limited entry tag, so I have been doing a lot of research on the units. After way too many hours in front of the computer, I can't see the forest because of all the trees! None of the LE units really stick out to me when I consider nonresident success, NR bow success, NR days/harvest, Forest Service land, etc. I have stayed away from the units where there are not big blocks of public land in the mountains as access issues and private ranches have me spooked. The good news is, some of the general units rank right up there with the LE units in my analysis (and I have had a couple people help me out with some great advice on that!). However, that leaves me confused. Some might say, hey, just be happy with the general tag.....but that leaves me thinking I am doing something wrong or missed something. Why are the odds 1% to draw a tag that returns only average success rates?
Does anybody have any tips on researching units they would be willing to share? I am trying to put in a lot of effort, but I only seem to be getting more frustrated! Sorry for the rant guys!
