merriam turkey

True Merriam's are in their native range in the mountains of NM and CO. I don't understand the point of going to the trouble of doing a slam, but doing it with introduced birds. I think I need to lease a high fence and grow all four subspecies into great big giant record book birds like they do with deer. Wonder how much I could get for a one day slam on limbhangers...

I thought where I hunted in the mountains here in Colo were pure merriams. The last 2 I shot (different locations) were more buff colored than white. As mentioned earlier they are either hybrids or possibly pure merriams that aren't 100% white. There are a lot of hybrids running around across the western us. With the expansion and introduction of different turkey flocks...it's likely getting tougher and tougher to find spots where you can be 100% certain they are pure merriams,,,rios...easterns.....especially where their boundaries tend to cross.
