Meat shortage?? NOT

Would be interesting to see if some locally processed options pop up. Live beef prices are super low, folks could buy a steer and butcher it themselves.
Yah beef prices have plummeted along with milk also. I wouldn't want to be farming right now dark times ahead for some.

From where I sit, I'm wondering if often times the media drumbeat becomes self fulfilling........ "look out, there is a meat shortage coming"...... and folks make a run on the meal aisle. Reminds me somewhat of the paper goods crisis. Charmin and Bounty were nowhere to be seen for weeks.

I get it that a certain fraction of the processing plants are under virus attach, but perhaps not enough to really make a huge difference if Americans use their heads...........oy!, what am I saying..... get your bacon NOW!

If they are adding wage incentives to worker pay at meat plants, I’m especially not worried about it.

Lean hog prices were up fairly strong today, live cattle were up a little, theoretically suggesting the situation will improve.

A farmer friend from VA has 400 beef cows ready to go with no buyer. 2 weeks ago a milk processing plant not far from us was dumping tank trailer loads of raw milk, that same day that my wife was limited to 2 gallons at the store. Talk about messed up

Yup

Just curious. How are any live animal prices down if there is a shortage

This is EXACTLY what is happening! There was no need for a TP or paper towel shortage, if folks had bought at their normal rate there would have been no problem at all...but people won't use their brains, in the past couple months I've learned the vast majority of folks are short-sighted and irrational when the chips are down.

I am not a prepper by the term by which most think of it. I think of myself as more of a preparer. I own my own land, raise my own cattle, can hunt elk, deer, turkey, quail, grouse, geese, ducks all on my own property ( although geese and ducks are at they way bottom of the menus, in fact things have gotten really bad at that point). I just don't like to depend much on other people to provide for my family. Grew up that way.
We will never have a meat shortage in this country. We have a media that creates fear.
