A friend of mine invited me on a group hunt with some of his friends for the gun opener in Area 2. Public land in north Louisiana, and this weekend would just be 3 of us hunting. Immediately after the invite I looked at OnX for a place to hunt and within a few minutes it was obvious where to go. A large section of land isolated by private land and a bayou. The gun season was Saturday and Sunday. I was able to take a vacation day Friday and scout it out and maybe kill a pig. On most Louisiana public lands you can kill pigs incidental with whatever season is in progress. In this case it's archery deer or small game. I brought my shotgun with BBB heavy shot shells.

Friday morning I got to my destination and began scouting. To get across the bayou I dragged my priogue 300yds from the truck to the bayou. I decided to use the pirogue to just cross the bayou and depending on what I saw from scouting I'd use it to float down the bayou later. About two hours of scouting and found a well used trail coming from a ticket towards an open bottom where a lot of oaks were dropping. I followed the trail through the thicket until it reached the open woods and dispersed. I was stopped and standing there looking at the map when 3 pigs were on a trot coming my way on the other side of a dry slough. Quickly I moved to head them off before they got past me and the lead pig noticed me and stopped. The other two stopped when the reached the first one, but paid no attention to me. The trio began to slowly meander and cross the slough towards me. Normally I try to wait for a broadside ear shot on a pig with a shotgun, but when one was within 10yds I took a head on shot to the forehead and dropped him. The other two ran off without a chance for a follow up shot. I quartered the pig, packed him back to the ice chest in my truck, and resumed scouting.

Scouting the rest of the evening I didn't find a lot of concentrated sign or anymore deer or pigs, but was able to put a plan together of where I expected the deer to be bedding and planed for a morning hunt. Making a float hunt with the pirogue wasn't practical since it has multiple log jams and drop off banks making it easy to flip the priogue trying to get in and out. So I settled for using it to cross the bayou where a slough spurred from it at both sides. While scouting I did find a very unique shed, and a large hog wallow.

Saturday morning I walked in along the bayou where I could walk quietly and set up about 100yds from the area I wanted to hunt and waited for daylight. Once daylight broke I eased in and found a log to sit on. In front and to my right was open oaks where I could see a long ways. To my left was a thick bedding area. I anticipated the deer to be coming from the oaks back to bed.

At 0840 I heard a limb break, and there was a spike walking towards me at 30yds. He didn’t follow the script I had written. There was absolutely no cover between me and him and I was wide open on a log. He kept walking closer and I couldn’t move to pick up my gun. He was right on top of me at 5yds. I kept my head down and eyes half closed. I was breathing so hard I had to hold my breath because I was afraid he would notice me. Finally as he got passed me I was able to lift my gun, but now trees were blocking him. I stopped him twice, but no shot and let him walk.

Anticipating more deer would travel the same path I moved back about 20yds. After moving I remained standing. At 0915 I was answering a text from my buddy who had killed a deer and I caught movement off to my right and could see horns. I knew I’d fumble trying to put it in my pocket so dropped it in the leaves. Put the scope on him and saw he was a big deer. When the cross hairs met the back of the shoulder I pulled the trigger. He immediately ran out me and first thought I missed. While chambering another round I could see blood pouring out and in that split second felt better. Shot again as he ran past me 10yds away but probably shot behind. He tangled in some trash and was about to shoot again when he hit the ground behind the log. I had to sit down and compose myself before walking over and checking him out. A main frame 9 point with some trash around his brow tines. Even after a putting my hands on him I was out of breath when I call my dad to tell him what I killed. I clean the deer in the woods and packed him out the 1.25 miles back to the truck.

With plenty meat and horns I chose to squirrel hunt Sunday. Unfortunately it was windy and they weren’t out. After hunting for an hour and only killing one, I decided to go retrieved my pirogue from the woods and then got a call to help my friend who had also shot a nice 9 point. Among the three of us we killed a pig, two does, and two 9 points. It was a great weekend, and I will now be partaking in this group hunt every year.

From one JTHOM to another, well done!

Any chance you a Jacob Thompson? I've met 3 others and it makes for an odd encounter.

Thanks everyone. This hunt was overall an awesome experience. The pig, unique shed, seeing the spike that close while on the ground, a great buck that I feel that I worked hard and smart for, and sharing it all with an old and now new friend. Couldn't ask for anything better.
