My oldest boy wants a BB gun he can shoot in the back yard. We looked at several at Walmart yesterday.

They had the cheap ones from 33$ . The better ones were from $75-$150 the range was 600FPS for the less money one to the $150 at 1,100-1,200 FPS and used pellets. I'm guessing more accurate ?!?

The higher end ones had little cheasy scopes but I'm sure shoot alot better ? I'd like one that shoots more consistant so he can practive taking his time and slowly squeezing the trigger and actually aiming.

Is it worth spending more money and getting the higher speed one ? Anyone with any experience in the BB gun area ? Any comments besides "You'll shoot yer eye out kid"...? :D :D

Moosie, spend the extra money on one. don't forget, you have 3 other young men that will be shooting it also. only bad part to the higher end ones. they sting a lot more when fired at each other. just a rite of passage to manhood to see who can hit the other more often.;)

Well if I were loaded...as you are...with cash

I would get the best as mentioned above you have like 13 more kids that will be using it. :D :D

But must also consider...the good ones can kill...a classic Red Ryder...will just put out an eye.

They have one now that can kill wild hogs...I watched it on the tube last year.

I think its great you're getting them a BB gun. It will give them something to do while you sit around smoking your cigars and drinking cognac!

...age appropriate information

I picked up a Daisy Buck from Academy last Tuesday for my 5 yr. old (nearly 6) grandson Kolter. Just the right size, fiber optic front blade/rear ramp/350 FPS/easy enough to @#)(#/trigger block safety. Took him out to the deer ground and he had a fixed grin for 3 hours. Drilled the safety aspects big time. I shot it once when we were getting ready to load up and drive home. He said, "You forgot to put the safety back on after you shot it Pap-paw."

...getting his soon to be 8 yr. old brother a Red Ryder this week.

I do not like the real BB guns at all. They are inaccurate and the BBs ricochet off of any rigid surface, and will keep bouncing around. A pellet will generally penetrate and stay inside even a plywood backstop or flatten out and stick to brick or cenderblock, etc rather than bounce back at the shooter like a BB. BB guns are more dangerous, as well as pretty useless, compared to a pellet rifle. Get him a pellet rifle and leave the BB guns alone.

My boys learned proper safety basics and how to shoot while using their BB Guns. They had the lower end models without scope. They also used goggles while shooting.;) I would not allow anything other than target shooting with them.(Hey I did all the wrong things when I was their age:eek:) They had Red Ryders and Daisy guns. They soon graduated to a .22 rifle and then 20 gauge shotgun.

I would get the one you think is best for the purpose you as the Dad intend it for.;)

Although this is for safety, it's more to shoot in the back yard too (And for his brothers coming down the pike...and little sister, but she'll have a pin one ;) ). He has a .22 and a 20 guage. The problem is with only a 1/2 acre lot, the neighbors (Not all of them grant ya) get mad when we shoot those in the back yard :p
