I am looking to see if there is a way for my son to hunt pigs or turkeys someplace with me when he is under 12 years old. WI has a 12 year age, but if he is responsable enough I would love to take him with me and hunt with him and let him be a shooter for something like turkeys or feral pigs. Anyone have any ideas?? He is 6 1/2 now but I was just thinking about it today and wondered what is in store in a few years..:D
Actually what would be cool is a hunt talk Father/Son-Daughter hunt outing someplace.

In Tn any child any age can hunt. A child from 6yrs-10yrs old can hunt on juvenile hunts also. After age 10, they must pass a hunters ed class and can still hunt until 13 yrs old without a license.

For biggame, it's 10 in AZ, as long as they have passed their hunter ed class. Without the hunter ed class, they have to wait until they are 14.

In CA......for big game they must successfully complete a Hunter's Safety Course and be 12 years old. For small game and birds, they must complete their Hunter's Safety Course and be 9 years old.

See if this helps schmalts.

TEXAS
Every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must successfully complete a Hunter Education Training Course. Minimum age of certification is 12 years and cost is $15.

If you were born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, and you are:

under 12 years of age, you must be accompanied*.
age 12 through 16, you must successfully complete a hunter education course, or you must be accompanied*.
age 17 and over, you must successfully complete a hunter education course; or purchase a Hunter Education Deferral, and you must be accompanied*.
New: Hunter Education Deferral (cost: $10) Allows a person 17 years of age or older who has not completed a hunter education program to defer completion for up to one year. A deferral may only be obtained once and is only valid until the end of the current license year. A person who has been convicted or has received deferred adjudication for violation of the mandatory hunter education requirement is prohibited from applying for a deferral. Take the course by August 31 of the current license year and receive a $5 discount.

*Accompanied means: By a person who is at least 17, who is licensed to hunt in Texas, who has passed hunter education or is exempt (born before Sept. 2, 1971), and you must be within normal voice control. Proof of certification or deferral is required to be on your person while hunting.

Note: Certification is not required to purchase a hunting license.

Bowhunter Education: Certification is required on certain areas of Texas (Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, Pottsboro and Camp Bullis, San Antonio).

Note: Bowhunter education does not substitute for Hunter Education certification.

Tel: 800-792-1112 ext. 62 for automated course line; all other calls: ext. 9-4999 or 512-389-4999.

Under 12 can hunt in Texas without hunters ed as long as they are accompanied by a licensed hunter 17 or older.

Yes you can. My son killed his first deer when he was 9 with me by his side. He finally took and passed the hunter's ed course before last season when he was 12. In Tx if they take the course before 12, it does not count and they have to take it again to get a card.
