I promised a hunter I'll help him on a bear yesterday on the last day of our bear season, but I had a cement job come up and had to work from 11:00 PM until nearly 4:00 AM Wednesday morning.

Anyway, you know how we bear hunters are don't you? I got home and loaded dogs thinking we'd make a short cut and maybe tree a bear. Right!

We cut up all the area around his camp and on the last cut came up with nothing. I always hate that feeling of failure, don't you? We began our drive out down our backtrail and the wind shifted which allowed the dogs to catch scent and they blew up on the box. I only had four left from a terrible long run on Monday.

I didn't even look for a track cause it was 11:00 AM, or like the 15th round of a world title fight--it was do or die time. Therefore, I cut Choco and Ryan loose and they tan straight out and hit in about 75 yards. Both hounds began to open and trail out so I cut Sammy and Griz loose as well.

The race was a fast and long one, ending with a nice boar. Kudos to Choco and Ryan for putting the heat on that bear on the last day. That ole Ryan dog is coming nine this summer and a real warrior.....I'm gonna miss that dog alot someday, but not yet!

Keep'em treed!

Ike, Congrats and way to go ! How many bear have you harvested so far in your life? Me, not one yet. Had one a couple of years ago, but didnt hit him well enough. Would love to go out with you one of these years. Anyways, congrats again.

Cameron Hunt,

I've personally killed two boars with the hounds. The first one was that brute I killed for a promotion with the tribe, and the second was killed in August on a depredation hunt to remove a bear from the watermelon fields north of Green River at the landowner and UDWR request. The brute was 28 years old and scored 21 8/16" Boone & Crockett while the second was seven years old and scored 19 4/16". I did buy a hunt in Canada and could have most likely killed another nice boar there. However, the purpose of that hunt was to help a hunting buddy enjoy his hunt--something you do for a good running buddy.hump

Where are you located Cameron? Utah has some pretty decent boars but the tags are limited and the hunt for those bears can be tough. If you look at the bear populations numbers across the bear states you'll find Utah is sucking hind tit for bear numbers.|oo

Keep'em treed!

Ike, thanks for the info. I am currently in Ca. Ya getting a bear tag here is like not going to happen. I was born and raised in Boise though. And I had lived in the Seattle area before moving down here. Kraven and I hunted ALOT while I lived up there and I hope to be able to get back this fall for some more Elk and Deer. I need to find some people down here that like to hunt so that I can get out this fall. Calihunter "Rick" is down here and maybe we can get together more so we can do some hunting.... ? He is as busy as I am though, maybe more. As long as you keep posting the stories and pics, I guess I will survive......LOL. Be safe out there chasin those bruins.

Cameron Hunt,

I've never looked into the bear permitting or tags in California, but it seems they have plenty and lots of people go there to run bears. I was chatting with a young man from up north last summer about bear hunting there and he invited me out. He claimed he and his father had a few dogs and were getting into the bear chasing. He seemed like a nice kid, so I mailed him both my Hound Dog Crazy videos--never heard from him again and wondered if he was afraid I was an outfitter that might come kill all his bears?|oo

Anyway, I hope you do get together with Calihunter and have some fun.hump

Thanks again!

Ike, I havent looked into what all is allowed and required to hunt bear here. Dont know that I will in all truth. Ya Cali (Rick) and I talked today again, he had gone to the gun show earlier in the day. I couldnt make it till later and he was on his way home by then. So maybe we can hook up again over lunch ? He is talking about a bull session at the local shooting range he belongs to in late june. I hope that I can go and meet some good guys that may want to chase some big brown bruins. Not sure if Rick hunts bear or not. Enjoyed your pics and stories. Thanks for sharing.

Well Cameron, good luck on finding some guys to hunt with out in California. Yeah, it's hard to think abut running dogs in southern California because of all the people. I'd say a guy better stay pretty close to his hounds and only dump on a red hot rig! hump

Those mutts of mine will rig the hell out of mountain lions, so I'm sure I'd get in trouble for treeing the large cats out there. |oo My skills as a hound trainer and game catcher are lots better than any skills I ever developed as a tracker or track finder--I just cut three or four dogs loose and let them find and run the track, as they are much bertter at it than I am.

Let us know if you ever get out down there!

Thanks Ike, Ya I was on a job on Thursday and we had to wait a little bit for the clock to say 7 before we could fire off the machinery. The guy I was working for was wearing a camo ball cap with his sunglasses on the bill, so I asked him what was on it. He said WHA, whitetail hunters of america. So there we go talking about hunting. I noticed an accent, and asked where in the south he was from. He turned out to be from South Carolina. And there we were talking about turkey and watching the time go right past start time.....LOL. So at break and lunch and after work we talked about hunting and sharing pictures. I think that we will get out together this fall for turkey. He has some good spots for them along with pig and deer. He also puts in for elk in many states. His name is Ken, and I told him about HT. and hope that he gets on here and gets to share some of his stories.

More photos of Ryan, Choco and Kody under a hump tree!

thanks,

I went out over the weekend looking for a lion to run with the hounds. The objective was to get the hounds exercise, and they did get off the box and go play abit.hump

My older three males, Ryan, Ike and Choco struck a coldtrail and moved it for awhile before I pulled them. Meanwhile, my little Rowen slipped off and went to trailing something. |oo The woods were full of elk, as I could see and smell them all around. I thought, "that little girl (nine year old) better not be out buggering a darn elk.

Rowen sounded treed on another ridge, so I grabbed Ryan and Ike and colllared them up to go see what she'd found. When I got a few hundred yards from her Ryan and Ike went on in and began to tree as well. To my surprise, that little fifty pound girl had a bear in the tree--and all by herself.

Kudos to Rowen for slipping off and having a little fun!hump
