Mtmiller, a co-worker of mine, and I are going to Kodiak Island either the 2nd or 3rd week in September to hunt for Sitka Blacktails and also fish for silver salmon and halibut. The trip is for four folks, so we need one more person to complete the party. This will be sort of a ‘semi-guided’ hunt as we’ve been in contact with a transporter who will take us from Anchorage to Kodiak via his boat, where he’ll provide room/board. Barring bad weather he’ll be taking us to the portion of the island where each person will be able to take up to 3 bucks. Even with bad weather he’ll be able to get us to a 1 deer/person area. Once to the hunting area he’ll drop us off with some instructions as to where to look for deer, thus the semi-guided moniker. He has a pretty good handle on the deer hunting on Kodiak as the #22 all-time B&C Sitka Blacktail has his name on it!
As stated earlier, the transporter will provide room and board on the boat in addition to all the fishing tackle. Price for the transportation service is $1400 for 7 days (his minimum). It takes a 40% of the total to reserve your spot, so $540. We’d like to get this confirmed in the next month or as soon as possible. If you’re interested let me know (pm me your email address) and I can forward some correspondence to you that I’ve had with the transporter.
In checking around, this is a VERY reasonable rate for transportation to Kodiak for hunting. Heck, there are many cities in the US that you would be hard pressed to get room and grub for $200/day.
