Kodiak Deer '07

I know TB will chime in, but I thought I saw on another board that the area he was hunting showed fewer deer and a missing year class.

That being said, I spoke with my goat outfitter and he said the deer in his area are doing well. Of course I think he is hoping I will toss in another $1K to hunt deer with him. I will pass, but hope to get up there again sometime and chase them on my own.

I've only been out 3 times, twice after work and one overnighter. In the valley I like to hunt I was seeing about 20-25 bucks a day the last couple years. On the overnighter I spotted around 12 bucks and the evening hunts I spotted an average of 3 bucks. I haven't spotted any worth going after yet. They all appear to be in the 2.5 to 3.5 year classes. I haven't seen any scrub forks or spikes, and that goes with F&Gs claim that there was an almost 100% die off of fawns. Of the 18-20 I've seen the biggest was a smaller 3x3 and a nontypical which basically had 2 G2's on one side. A friend was up in a different area and they took an average 3x3 with eyeguards and spotted a nice 3x4. I've got some other areas I'm going to poke around in before I fill the freezer with one of the smaller 3x3s though. You'll see bucks and if your in a valley that wasn't hit too hard last winter you should do fine. Good luck.

Miller when is your goat hunt?

I fly to Peterson's lodge 10/8. Still haven't made my flight reservations, but will probably come in on the 7th. Thought about coming a little early and trying for a deer, but renting a car and extra hotel nights might be more than I should be spending right now. I will get back up there in a couple years to concentrate on deer. I think it would be a good hunttalk get together if we can get a crew.

Good luck finding a keeper deer. BTW, I don't remember where I saw your original post about the deer herd, but remember the pic of you hunting partner from this season. Could you post it here? It was a cool picture.

Thanks,
We'll be flying to Kodiak on 11/9. Hope to hear some reports from the southwest part of the Island before then.

Take care,

Here's the pic of the overnighter the dog and I did.

Here's one of the little buck that walked by about 60 yards out. Too bad the big boys never do that. :)

I fly into Kodiak on the 2nd of November. I have heard that there are still mature bucks running around but the younguns are gone. Hopefully one mature buck and I can do a little seaduck hunting and fishing for halibut and it will be a good trip for me!!!. Are you going with an outfitter?? or transporter?

Hntnhrd,
We are using ACM as our transporter, hunting down by Akhiok. I also hope to get one good buck and maybe into some halibut. I booked back in January of '06, and only have to wait 69 more days.
