Jig and weeds

Tried a jig with plastic on it yesterday, actually first cast, second or third "hop" along the bottom and I caught a nice 15 inch bass! AFter that we caught more weeds than anything. Bottom was mostly sand, but ended up giving up on the jig due to weeds on 1/2 the casts.

Is there a trick, or is it so obvious: just don't use it if you're catching weeds.

They make those weedless jigs with strong bristles that prevent weed snagging but soft enough for a good hook-set! I'd look into that!

I also thin the "bristles" a little for better hooksets when not in super heavy cover.
The best thing I have learned is to buy jigs that have the eyelet to tie to way out on the tip of the nose of the jighead. this way when weeds slide down your line there isn't a spot for them to catch on the top of the jig head.

Not like this:

You can even use a jighead similar to this, thread the plastic on and hook it texas style so that the hook is still in the plastic grub. very weedless.
