Last friday morning I drove from S.C. to downtown New Orleans to spend the weekend with my wife.
Early Saturday morning it became apparent we should leave-everyone was talking about it-radio tv etc. No one can claim ignorance.
We left town at noon on Saturday and encountered little traffic. I dare say the traffic was average for a saturday in the area.
I now hear of folks needing assistance. Don't get me wrong, children with stupid parents should be helped, but, can these people really claim the world done'em wrong?
If a fella walked 1 mph he could have been outside the flood zone if he waited til noon sunday to start walkin.
I may be heartless, I just do not feel much sympathy for wrong thinking, lazy adults.

Yeah, good point...if they couldn't ride a bus, train, bicycle, motorcycle, skateboard, roller skates, or drive a car, they could have walked out of there with all the warning they had. From the sounds of it, it seems many of these people are the type that expect the government to do everything for them, and will not take responsibility for themselves. |oo

You did a smart thing there, leaving. Look at this story today.

"Those who wanted food were waiting in line for hours to get it, said Becky Larue, of Des Moines, Iowa.
Larue and her husband arrived in the area last week for a vacation but their hotel soon told them they had to leave and directed them to the Superdome. No directions were provided, she said.
“I’m really scared. I think people are going into a survival mode. I look for people to start injuring themselves just to get out of here,” she said.
Larue said she was down to her last blood pressure pill and had no idea of when they’ll get out or where to get help."

I guess they tried to stretch their vacation or felt safe at the hotel or something, I don't know, maybe there were no cabs then? They ended up spending a bad time at the dome, based on advice given in the story there.

The mandatory evacuation was unpressidented, some were in hospitals, some were poor, etc. Its the biggest natural disaster around this country, people deserve some
sympathy and help, they need the help.

I'm glad I don't live or work in a place like that for sure.

I agree with the Nickster.....except for the helpless, handicapped, homeless, and old and sick, nursing home etc, etc. you run a risk if you stay... but i have helped with donations and feel sorry [even for the stupid].... what a mess.

Hands raised here for all of you who have ever lived in a hurricane area?

Every hurricane gets an evac notice.

Hurricanes have a huge tendency to change directions several times before landfall however. So the big one headed for St. Mary's Parish, LA will often finally end up headed for the Florida panhandle usually after having changed course 5 times. Also many hurricanes start out as cat. 4 or 5 and the minute they hit land downgrade to a 1 or 2 which doesn't do more damage than knock over your garbage can and blow a few leaves around.

Hurricanes are counted each year by the fact that they are named in alphabetical order. We are up to Ophelia at this point? That makes 15 in my reckoning.

Given all this, if you had no car and little money would you have "walked out of there" 15 times every year?

Where are the Fla boys? Am I making any of this up? Plus I think you guys have chosen to ride one or two of these things out. Some fairly nasty ones if I heard right.

Nice to see you again.
I lived in Florida for 3 years and you are right, I did ride a few. Some worse than others.
I never walked out-not once. Never drove out either. Never complained about how my poor decision making was someone else's responsibility either.
I was in N.O. the day before. This time the warnings were much more vigorous, much more emphisized(sp), much more believable. It was obviously not the same-not to mention the elevations don't allow for mistakes there.
I left and I'm glad I did. I wish more had left.
I think that those who stayed complain about the situation they find themselves in. Those who left complain about their situation and I complain about them all.
Lets do something smart like re-build the place.

Tropical storms are named alphabeticaly! If they turn into a hurricane they retain the name of the tropical storm. They don't evacuate for a tropical storm. How many of these turned into a hurricane this year, I don't know. But they wouldn have had to leave 15 times. I live on the coast, we have hurricanes. They are usually pretty blown out by the time they get here, with a few exceptions. If it looks bad...we head west, we get out of Dodge. Head for safety, thats what those folks should have done. We have insurance to cover damage to the house, boats, and cars. We have digital photos, and videos on a CD that is kept in the safe deposit box at the bank. This is evidence of what we had!

If I lived 6' below sea-level on the coast, I would show some major respect for evacuation notices.
