4 days left in the season and an unfilled tag.... so I went out Thursday night and set up the Double Bull blind. Set-up in an area where the birds run the fence line and cross the open fields. Woods to the north and woods to the south & lots of birds. Initially a bearded hen... I just can't shoot a bearded hen. Later I hear some gobbles way back in the valley so I give out some soft calls (I like the soft calls in the evening). I know where they will most likely appear so I just give a soft call every 15 minutes or so. Eventually they appear 250 yards away in the open field. Another soft call and they see the DSD's & the race is on. (NOTE: I just bought these decoys this spring with Cabelas points and they are the real deal... game changers). I choose the bigger one, however, the other tom was a really nice bird also (love his thick beard). 19 lbs. 1 inch spurs and 11 1/4 inch beard. Nice for a late season bird.

Good looking gobbler. It looked like the other tom might have had a double beard, but not too sure after watching a second time. BTW, the grass they crossed to get to your decoys is more than exists in all of Arizona combined.

No double beard.. just a "split beard". He has a nicer set of spurs than the one that I shot.

Well done! Sounds like I may need to pick up some nicer decoys for next spring with my son as we'll be hunting out of a blind.

1-pointer: I originally bought the Avian-X decoys. After getting them home I realized that they are filled with air. I called Cabelas and asked what happened if they were to be shot? They deflate and you can try and patch the hole. Well, I take kids and an older gentleman and I could just see those decoys getting shot... so I returned them and went with the DSD's that are all plastic and do NOT deflate. More expensive, however, I hope in the long term they last.

Thanks for that tip!!

Dog,
Great choice with the DSD's. Worth the extra dough indeed. Did look like hop along cassidy had him some fine hooks too! Congrats.

Yes, Hop Along... had some better spurs. I realized that after I shot the other bird and looked at Hop Along with the binos
