I drew 2165. Draw odds were decent for this tag and historically success rates have been around 4-5%. I am sure that the lucky 4-5% guys might be slightly offset by individuals with access to private land. So far this hunt has been awesome considering it is an extra tag. I don’t have any expectations of finding any easy elk.
If anyone has this tag and would like to PM me I have several locations that I have been checking on a regular basis for any movement. Because of the size of the unit I have to pick one or 2 a day. The elk in the unit do a lot of traveling but I feel that if I had another hunter reporting on movement and comparing notes, pin pointing the elk might be more realistic. All of the spots that I have set foot in produce sign old and new. The habitat definitely holds elk. They pass through and catching them where you can shoot them is the trick.
If no one responds at least there will be a thread here on this unit for years and years to come. So far I have seen several coyotes, 1 wolf, tons of deer, a porcupine, and loads of elk sign. Maybe worse case scenario I’ll just publicly blog about this Xtra tag as I feel like it’s been a fun opportunity, but perhaps in the future I’ll focus on trapping during this time frame.
if anyone has any info or pointers or access to private land I would do back flips and cartwheels for such precious info.
