Idaho sheep tag brings $46,000
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A special Idaho bighorn sheep tag brought $46,000 at auction recently, and that money will help the Idaho Department of Fish and Game pay for bighorn research and management.
Ken Trudell of Green Bay, Wisc., made the winning bid at the annual convention of the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep. He will be able to hunt in any open sheep hunt this fall with the exception of Unit 11 in Hells Canyon.
A tag that will allow hunting in any open unit, including Unit 11, will go to the winner of this year´s lottery, which also is conducted with help from the Idaho chapter of the FNAWS.
Hells Canyon, including Unit 11, is known for producing some of the largest bighorns in North America. The permit to hunt there is rotated between the annual auction and the lottery so that hunters who don´t have the money to buy it have the opportunity to win it.
Since the first auction in 1988, nearly $900,000 has been raised for research and management of Idaho bighorns. The lottery, started in 1992, has raised about $300,000 for research on bighorn health, conducted at the wildlife laboratory in Caldwell. In 2003, the auction tag brought $90,000 when it included Unit 11, and $47,000 in 2002, when the tag went to the lottery.

The price was way down this year. Might be the economy.
