Planning a trip to eastern South Dakota around new years for some perch fishing. Weve never fished it before but have heard the fishing is good. Any advice on what lakes to target. Thanks for any info.

Dry Lake, just north of the town of Willow Lake has good perch. Waubay Lake by Webster has great perch. Anything north of Hwy 14 is a good bet.

It has been ages since we've fished eastern SD but had fun at Lake Vermillion when I was a kid. The fishing may be different now but we caught a ton of perch and crappie with some smaller walleye and northern. Not to take you away from this forum but there is a forum called Ice Shanty that will lead you down the right path...it should be getting fired up for the season by now.

I grew up on Lake Vermillion! Fishing is sporadic through the ice, but walleyes and crappie are the normal fare.

It's almost best not to try to plan for specific lake. There are so many in that region that I would plan in staying in the Webster/Waubay area, then make plans to specific lakes based on current local reports. Rest assured, there will be good fishing somewhere. Make sure you're set up to drill lots of holes.

That region is phenomenal and you should have no problem having a great time on a multi-species trip.

What Smalls said. and Call Sportsmans Cove in Webster. Doug has an answering machine with a fishing report on it, updated at least once a week. Also search for Dakota Angler baitshop. I think it's in Watertown. He does a weekly report on-line. Those will be some good starting points if you don't mind the crowds. There is good fishing in a LOT of the lakes. Sometimes it's just fun to try a few different ones in a weekend.
