I recently applied for a job near my hometown in Eastern ND. They did a phone interview during which we briefly discussed my desired salary range, my thoughts matched theirs and they flew me out for a face to face interview.

I was offered the job via email the night of the face to face interview. The salary offered was the low end of where I was seeking (which was fine w/ me), but the benefits package was horsepoo (basically 50% medical/dental/vision and 3% matching simple IRA). Maybe I expect to much but the company had no flex-benefits, no profit sharing, no ESOP, no bonus program linked to the division I would have been working in and very little time off.

Long story short, I made a weak counteroffer citing the reasons for the counter. I got no response so I left several voicemails and emails trying to confirm they had gotten my offer. This morning was the deadline (that we had mutually agreed upon) for me to accept the job and I declined. They finally emailed back AFTER I turned the offer down to tell me they had already hired someone else. I guess had I decided to accept their offer I would have been up sheet creek (north of Fargo :D).

I had hoped to keep the door open for the future when we do decide to move home, but I am pretty sure I won't be applying with them again.

Smalls,

Already thinking of moving back to ND? I keep seeing in the paper that there are more jobs then applicants in western Montana. Of course most of those jobs are flipping burgers.

Erosion of Employee benefits is happening everywhere.

My brother recently had a similar experience.
My advice to him was "take the job as they offered it". Get in the door, and then prove your worth. After you become indispensable a year or so down the road, you can start talking raise or better benefits.
You may be a superstar, worth twice what you’re asking, but they don’t know that, and they won’t know that until you have proved it to them day in and day out for a long time.

Apparantly I am not applying for the right jobs. I am working now...but not where I want to be. I am continuing to search for positions and apply, but right now I know several very qualified unemployed people who cannot even get an interview (myself included). This weekend I am going to trash all of my resumes and start over.

As far as the benefits go...I wouldn't be pissed if they would have let me know that that was the best they could do (do), but to not respond and go ahead and hire the position from underneath me bothers me...oh well, deep breath.

As far as moving to ND, I've been looking for jobs and I noticed that one near my hometown so I shot them a resume. In the end the decision to stay meant turning down decent $$$ with a company that has some great growth potential. Right now the wife and I want to be in MT, hell I didn't even shoot an elk last year. I can't move to Montana and leave without shooting an elk, I would never live that down! :D

The dude was probably interviewing several canidates for the job, and hired the first taker. If he was adding a few positions, I could see how he might not have had much time to get back with you. Not exactly curtious, but understandable.

Hiring aint easy. Everyone puts on their best face in their resume and interview. You usually have to pay a few months salary to find out if they are a dumb azz or not. I've had good luck and bad.

Most recently, I have been doing extensive mental agility and personality testing, in addition to the routine math tests, interviews, etc.

That's a fact, and it doesn't have to even be for new hires.....we're watching our benefits slowly go down the drain, but not where you would think....our company doens't outright take them away, they just slowly make you pay more and more for them. Some guys are already canceling some of their health benefits and picking there's up on the open market cause it is cheaper......

Heck Smalls, I know that the plant out at Coal Strip was recently hiring.....I'll try to keep my eyes open for ya....MT or ND

True, good benefits are hard to find.. just had a Colonastomy, cost $1000. I had to pay a total of $460. out of pocket...never doing that again...

But just move on and keep looking.....I agree that you get your foot in the door .. then prove yourself.....you can always look for a better job while working.

cjcj, Are you sure they didn't already get their payment? I thought you had money coming out your whazoo!:D

cjcj would gladly pay $1000 to give Jose a colonastomy,,,,,

As an "EMPLOYER" I can say benifits are hard for a company to pay and swallow. Especially a new complany trying to cashflow. As Owners of the company we're in the 20th percentile nationally of pay for working there. But we have to offer good prices to clients to build up the client base. Everybody (employees) want top $ as a sallary and top $ for benifits. I know we're working hard as we can to be comparable in the market but it is tough to pay the large firms wages to people and offer good incentive packages too. Although most people want to work for us because we're Kick A$$ boss's ;) ZING !!!!!

Good luck Smalls !!!

I was just trying to be funny. I saw a commerical where a guy was on getting worked on by a bunch of nurses and doctors and the doctor says he found the problem. He had money coming out the wazoo. I only saw it a couple of times and thought it was funny.
