OK, everyones fired up about elk hunting.. How about us lonly Turkey hunters

Question, Is it ethical to shoot a Turkey out the tree with a bow in the middle of the day ? Or is it like ground sluecing a phesant ? I have no Qualms about shooting a bird not in flight but GEt RAZZED BIG time by my buddies.....

Whats the case on Turkeys ?

I would have to say no...turkeys on roost are usually off limits. I'd feel like an ass doing it, anyway. Now if they were on the ground with a rope around their neck, tied to the tree...that's a different story.

Is it considerd a "ROOST" if it's in the middle of the day ? Or they get scared and Fly into the tree to hide from you ?

I am afraid that I agree with Darren also on this one. I wouldn't shoot em out of the tree. I would try to scare em and once they left the limb I would cut loose.

What's the difference a bout shooting one "LEAVING" the roost.. but not "IN" the roost ? KIND of like sneaking on a bedded deer. I spot the deer, I sneak up to it.. I get close enough.. BANG !!!! Nuff said.

Does that make me less of a hunter cuz I do that ?

Turkey out of the tree, deer or elk in their bed or duck/geese on the water is all fair game. If it is not against the law then it is OK by me.

All right, in the sense of roosted turkeys at night, that's a no-no because it's too easy. "Hunting" like that is what decimated the turkeys the first time around. As far as turkeys treed in the daytime, I don't really have an excuse for you. How often do you see a turkey in a tree in the daytime? Can you sneak to within bow range of one? If the sucker is awake and alert and you manage to sneak up on it, why not? I'd like to see it happen, though. My Daddy didn't hunt turkeys, so I can't lay that on you.

I don't think we will decimate the turkey population if you follow all the regs today by shooting them out of the tree for any reason...The bag limit isn't big enough and your not supposed to shoot hens..not around here in this state any way!!!

It against the law in Ohio. So ya can't do it here. In other states it is legal. I would read up on the regulations in Idaho.


My Dad also never hunted turkeys so he wouldnt say that. and ya still cant do it in Ohio.

FALL hunting is a DRAW only.. It's for a male or Female bird. THE younger birds when spooked on flat land Fly right up into the trees.. THEY think they can hide

SO, getting one in a tree durring the day can be done.... MAYBE I'll shoot one in a tree and Video tape it just for YOU D'

The thought of the President of the Turkey Federatino is the whole fun/sport of hunting turkeys is to break up a flock, then CALL them back in. CALLING is the fun part of it. He did say, however, that the FALL season is just to maintain #'s and it is therefor more of a control thing. Since it's a HEN/TOM deal. So shooting one like that he wouldn't do, but wouldn't say anythnig to someone that did...

Had a conversation with the DNR here in michigan any turkey in a tree is illegal to shot. No matter what time of day it is.

Not that turkeys are known for their brains, but if you get close enough with a bow, when it's in a tree, then you would do the population a favor by taking it.

If your using a bow thats challenge enough so take it anyway you can. Dont matter if its roosting, eating ,fu#king,flying, or struttin, i wouldnt think anything less of you than i already do

OK OK... I actually did Take it out the tree last fall.... Uhhhh Just not with the bow

I guess "THEY" say.. (Whoever "THEY are) that in the Spring ya call them in, never take one out the tree... And in the Fall jsut Shoot whatever, however, as long as it is legal..... Reason being is the Fall hunt is for the Harvest, trying to maintain #'s or something.... Although I don't know if I'd have qualms in the Spring either
