How about the recoil lug?

So, been reading. Upgrade or not? mtmuley
Fully dependent.

They are cheap (relatively) to other items of a gun build, so on one hand, why not?

But it would depend upon several factors to me.
Is the face of the receiver trued?
If not, your just wasting your time & money with a trued recoil lug.

What cartridge & actual usage & expectations on your build?
300RUM for hunting elk/moose to 400 yards? Not needed.
204 Ruger trying to hit prairie dogs at 800 yards? A definite yes!

Reallistically, the bedding is going to be more important.

The recoil lug is the only thing holding an action in place, from both recoil and rotational forces at the shot. Get a big one and bed all of it but the front side.

When I bed a rifle I also bed the recoil lug. Clean out behind it, around it and under it. Then couple strips of tape om the sides, bottom and front and bed soild to the back of the lug. Never had a problem doing that. Nothing touchs except the back of it.

That's interesting. Years ago in the mod 788 days it was said the 788 was taking sales away from the 700 and that's why they quit making the 788. Seems people though the reason was the 788 had a faster lock time. I don't know if that is true or not but I guess it is something to talk about!

Probably come a day when the finish on the stock will create a more accurate rifle! :)
