Hey everyone. One of my adult sons can take a week off in the first half of April and he has asked me to go hiking with him (which I love). Together we have hiked various parts of the Appalachian trail (never the entirety). Anyway, both of us are in shape and have everything needed for up to a week long adventure. I was just spitballing if we should fly out west and see something new for 4-5 days? I welcome ideas, thanks!

Altitudes above 5k feet might still have snow or patches of snow. Deeper snow the higher you get in altitude.

You could fly into one of the backcountry airstrips in the Middle Fork of the Salmon. Figure out a route and have a return flight out from another airstrip. You’ll see deer, elk, maybe bear and sheep. Beautiful country.

Echoing @brymoore, here's the current snow depths for the inter-mountain west. Not a bad time of year to hit the desert parks and monuments fwiw.

Needles Highway in the hills opens back up April 1. Good drive. Some good trails in Custer State Park and that general area. Little Devils Tower, buncha trails to Black Elk Peak. Some other good trails in the area. Badlands NP should be free of snow as well.

Southwest for sure! It snowed again in our northwest mountains last night. Looks like the fresh snow line is at about 2,000' ASL.

Southwest has lots of great hiking/backpacking trails available. Beautiful out there too.

Enjoy! Guy
