Highlake Fishing and Bull Trout

Nice Pictures and it sounds like a great day of fishing. Maybe next time you should use some special worms that bull trout don't like and avoid this whole ordeal.

JMCD,

If Elkcheese wasn't such a stupid idiot, he would have half a clue and not use bait and hooks if he is "catch and release" on everything like he claims. Using bait and a hook is a sure way to make sure the guts and gills get ripped out and the fish dies.

If the Cheese had a brain, he would be using a single, barbless hook for his catch and release.

lull between hunting seasons?

Ahh, the familiar sound of acrimony...normalcy returns. :D

Its really up to each law enforcement officer if they would write a ticket or not.... We have the same thing here with different species. and had the same thing in washington.

thats the deal about fishing in waters you dont know what you hooked or how bad.
Just think if the fish was gut hooked and died, it wouldnt be elkchsrs fault but he could get cited for it. Most people wouldn't write him a ticket but there are some people that would.

You 2 guys do nothing but start shit with elkchsr give it a fugging rest.
And threatening to send the pics to a game and fish officer geeze fuggin christ buzz you fuggin lost it.

Del,

Please go back to the part where I threatened to send the pics to a warden (dont spend too long trying as it isnt there)...please tell me your comprehension is better than that of the cheese.

I was sincerely trying to save this "fuggin" (to use your words) idiot some grief. It isnt real smart to post a picture like that of a FEDERALY protected species on a public board. You never know who's reading these things, and I'd bet money that fish cops frequent hunting boards from time to time.

I realize that bull trout are caught from time to time, but there are PROPER ways to release and handle those fish IMMEDIATELY.

I'd bet money you'd be a pissed off bastard if you saw some dimwit dragging bass up the bank, rolling them in the dirt, squeezing them, crushing their gill plates, etc. rather than following proper releasing techniques....in particular if bass were a THREATENED species. I thought of all people on the board, you'd take proper fish handling and catch and release seriously...I guess not.

Del, you're as wrong as cheese on this one...it isnt funny, it isnt cute, and its flat abuse of wildlife. Plain and simple.

Elkchsr,
One assclown is the Head of PETA and the other Assclown is from Missoula. You cant expect anything less from from these guys.

Like I said, these photos are an email away from an appropriate MTFWP Law Enforcement Officer...
I think this would be consider a threat dont you.....

No I wouldnt for one bass arent protected .
Buzz I find it amusing and typicle of you to be able to look at a picture and know everything that happened.

I do take catch and release seriously no matter what species it is, well with the exception of carp we through them on the bank for yote bait.

At slot lakes like rosy and alamo we have a catch and release immediatly of any bass in the slot. We have a paper tourny at those lakes where we measure the slot fish instead of bringing them back to weigh-in,
so we unhook the bass
then grab it measure it on a board
then release it
this practice has been going on for years and in many different states, I have yet to see/hear of anyone getting busted or even be told this is illegal or not to do it. and in all rights it is illegal because it must be released immediatly.
I will thank you for one thing on this thread and thats opening my eyes up to the release immediatly I can use that to stop the paper tournys in this one group that most of us fishermen dont like for other reasons. The rules committie meets in a few weeks on paper tournys in slot lakes and I am going to bring this up to try to stop them.

you post however against elkchsr was way out of line. I know you 2 arent fond of each other but you just have a way of keeping it going.

It's not so much that I'm not fond of Butz the Putz, it is that he needs some one to look at as an arch nemisis...

Kind of third gradish, but some peoples boats float a little different.....

Oh, and Butz the Putz....

You can justify any thing you want in your own mind as you have in the posts after my last one, but it still doesn't make you right in any fashion, only self justified...

LOL GF... :)

I guess I will have to say it again....

If you think your right in your self agrandized agenda here...

Make the calls, you are invited to do so...

Utilize the information I have presented, it's all there, if you think you have a case...

Otherwise, just sit and eat yet another loss, or the term, "Eating Crow" comes to mind...

Maybe some day you won't be left holding the bag looking foolish... I sure hope so, for your sake... Your getting to old and hmm.... wise  to keep this up for to much longer, but then again, I have met old men around here who still do the same thing to their own detriment... :)

Del,

I'd bet money that there would be none of the crap that elkcheese displayed going on if bass were a federally protected endangered species. Cheese showed a complete disregard for wildlife in his usual dumbass manner.

Big difference between an abundant fish and one thats on the verge of making the Endangered Species List. The federal wardens take threatened and endangered species very seriously.

As to the alleged "threat"....you're full of crap. I was just pointing out to the Anaconda dumbass just how easy it would be for someone to send those pics to someone that may do more than just tell him how dumb he is.

The reason bull trout are listed in Montana is because of clueless bastards just like elkcheese who kill them needlessly through bad catch-and-release practices, overharvest/poach them, and refuse to take the ESA seriously. If guys like cheese continue to remain ingorant on issues like this, we'll all pay the price of having more and more waters off-limits to all angling for all species...and thats a fact.

From looking at those pictures, honestly tell me that the federally protected bull trout cheese caught were handled properly...come on Del, you fish enough to at least know the difference...dont you?

Just to give you a little more shit Russ. ;)
They were out of the water long enough to turn around, snap the pic and back into the water... about 3 seconds or so...
I noticed you mention the lengths of the fish, were you just estimating? :D

I've stayed out of this, but have been reading it, I know in Idaho you are not supposed to remove catch and release fish from the water. Idaho rules for Bull Trout specifically state they may not be removed from the water and are to be released immediately. I'm sure they were purely incidental catches but to remove them from the water to take pictures is dumb IMO. The first one is obviously dirty and being squeezed, I hope it survived. I've caught my share of bull trout, I have one mounted on my wall from the year before we could no longer keep them, and I prize catching everyone I do now due to there status. Since Idaho went to catch and release for them I have caught many more and I'm sure numbers have improved on them, but from what I've heard Idaho's populations are severly lacking genetic diversity and could still face big trouble down the line due to genetic bottlenecks; simply put this species needs all the help it can get.

I hate to wade into this but if it were me I would take those pics down before somebody forwards them to the FWP personel. No threat implied or intended and I am not going to do it but in this open forum many things can happen.

From the FWP

Catch-and-Release Angling
Waters designated catch-and-release for one or more species of fish require that those fish be immediately released alive.

Use of proper handling techniques will improve the chance of survival for any fish released. A fish that is released may still die from: deep hooking injury; internal organ damage from being squeezed; bacterial infections resulting from loss of slime in the handling process; effects of physical stress from being played too long; low dissolved oxygen in live wells; and heat shock from being held in shallow water or live wells.

Releasing Fish
To ensure a released fish has the best chance for survival:
-Play the fish as rapidly as possible. Do not play it to total exhaustion.
-Keep the fish in water as much as possible when handling and removing the hook.
-Remove the hook gently. Do not squeeze the fish or put your fingers in its gills. There are release devices available from most sporting/fishing stores to assist you and, use of barbless hooks makes releasing fish easier.
-If the fish is deeply hooked, cut the line. Do not yank the hook out. Most fish survive with hooks left in them.
-Release the fish only after it has gained its equilibrium. If necessary, gently hold the fish upright in the current facing upstream and move it slowly back and forth.
-Release the fish in quiet water close to the area where it was hooked

On the outside chance that one of those fish died and the fish cops can prove it was you then you are required to pay $500 restitution for each fish.

In addition by fishing with bait in waters known to contain bull trout you could be considered targeting them. Go read the rules it specifically states that one test for determining intentional taking is the use of baited hooks.

I would just take down the pics and chalk it up to experience. But that is just me.

I think Del said it about right. This thread is nothing more than 2 assholes who have a hard-on for elkchsr, doing what they do best. My money says that if anyone else but chsr posted this there'd be no issue. For shits sake, he caught a fish and released it. If you two dicks really care so much about wildlife and proper fish handling, offer some advice. But its pretty obvious your primary goal is to act like jerks and start shit.

OK buzz I will give you my honest opinion of the pics Non bias'd opinion. And having caught thousands of gaybass steelhead and salmon.

First fish pic, other than needing a new pair of jeans and taking a picture of a gay bass, not to mention needs a shower and a shave,
I would say he grabbed the fish and when whom ever was taking the pic the fish wiggled( happends all the time) and since Gay Bass are really slimy they tend to slip, I dont think he squeezed the fish I do think he tried to prevent it from falling on the ground.

Second fish pic.
I see him holding a fish AKA Gay bass like they should be held, his fingers are not inside the gill plates they look to be outside the gill plates. there is no squeezing fingering the gill or anything like that.
Matter of fact thats how I would hold the fish, If he held it by its lip hanging down he could dislocate the jaw bone, I see lots of guys doing that to bass .

As far as what newmont sad on live bait, hes dead right, live bait you tend to bait the protected fish more than you would on artificials, however that being said I have caught carp on spinner baits topwater plugs and ever dropshotting rubber worms. you really never know what your going to catch on the end of a line.
In some waters in washington we had No steelhead allowed to be caught ever( no season) however we still caught them there was nothing we could do not to catch them, it just happened. they hit the same lures or baits that the rainbows and browns and cutts hit. We always took pics of them, we were also very carefull to release them. but they do squirm from time to time and slip out of your hand it could be while your taking a pic or taking the hook out you never know when.

I have found that gay bass are more calm when they are out of the water so it makes it alot easier to take the hook out.....

Dont get me started on nets, nets are the worse thing for a fish and its protective slim coating, up until just resently have net manufacturers made nest that are suppose to reduce the risk of removing that slim. I never seen one yet but hear they exist and are expensive.

Only a friggin' moron could not read this thread and find out how to properly handle a fish when catching and relase. For you to think that Cheese is knowledgable speaks volumes on your ignorance.

They were released, I don't keep Bull trout, and most generally rainbows or cuthroats...

I also didn't know there was a way just to catch Bull trout with out catching every thing else at the same time with this high tech bait I use, give me some hints -O- Wise one, that would be a great trick to know...

Del, not sure how many years since you salmon and steelhead fished in waters with endangered and threatend species, but most of us know that we are on borrowed time to even be allowed to fish IN water with threatened species, therefore it is incumbent upon fishermen to reduce mortality, and the easiest way to do that is use artificials and a single barbless hook.

As for your Bass, are your tourneys regulated there? The ones up here that I know of have lots of monitoring on the condition of the fish, and if you kill one, you are out of the money, I believe.

Bottom line, as usual, the Cheese was clueless, and despite the efforts of people to edjumacate him (Buzz, MTMiller, Nemont, The Tone, etc...) the guy remains ignorant and in denial. Hopefully he is man enough to admidt his errors and turn himself in to the authorities.

jmcd- Do you really think it's just "picking on" the cheese? I would hope, if I was dumb enough to post pictures of myself doing illegal activities, someone would "pick on me" enough to get me educated. I would also be apologetic as hell and hope no one does take my prodding and turn my dumb ass in.

Delw- If you feel he hasn't done anything illegal or unethical with a threatened species, call the MT FWP and ask them if they feel the same way. I know you would get a strong opinion from them. If you catch a bull trout would you honestly do the same thing and post it on this web site? If you did, I have given you wayyyy too much credit in the past.

Cheese- I can honestly say it is somewhat up to the discretion of the game warden but seeing dirt on a bull trout and holding it well above the water reduces the chances a warden would look the other way. If you would like to talk to someone who knows the phone # is (406) 542-5500 and I'm sure it would be enlightening. They would also be able to give you some sage advice and the proper handling of a threatened species. You truly are clueless. You should probably call the FWP before you dare someone else to turn your dumbass in...unless that problem of you having too much cash laying around needs to be solved.

What's the penalty for not immediately releasing them, especially since they are ESA, that might carry some weight in preventing someone from taking them out of the water before they release them? Do you guys know what the penalty would be?

$500 and having to prove they die, that's pretty hard to prove and not that big of a fine, is there some other penalty?

Yep, Butz the Putz Dogs are back.... What a mongral pack...

guner/sybil.... your just babling, you should change your name to that topic Moosie put up a bit about him changing his name... "Bob LeBlah.... Your lip still hurt, I bet you sit and type with one hand and jerk the other???

Thanks for the advice Mutz, I may take it into consideration...

jmcd,

Read the thread...I've given direct advice from the MT fishing regs. But, cheese still refuses to listen or learn.

Personally, I dont give a shit who posted those pictures, I'd of said the same thing. The difference being most people with 1 firing brain cell would have taken the advice, been a man and admitted they were wrong, and moved on. Instead the cheese has asked to be turned in to the authorities for mishandling endangered fish.

Oh, and Del, look at the first picture with the dirt covered bull trout. The cheese hasnt even taken the hook out of that fish yet. You can see the line leaving the fishes mouth and going straight to the ground where it was just beached.

Bottom line is those fish are not be removed from the water and should be handled with kid gloves...literally.

We cant afford, as sportsmen, to portray ourselves in the manner that cheese has chosen to display our ranks...several times. We also cant afford to lose any more bull trout or we risk losing fishing privileges. We all have an obligation to every sportsmen, the endangered animals, and the law to see this type of behavior stopped. Some people would rather learn the hard way I guess.

Wow...I hadn't looked at this thread until tonight, as I usually don't go to the fishing forum, but with 37 replies and over 400 views, I just had to take a look and see what was so interesting here. First of all, nice pictures Elkchsr. And as to whether some on here are trying to start shit with you or only trying to "help," I think if they were trying to be helpful, a PM would have been a better way to do so. The very first post by Buzz, he ends with a nice comment: "You really arent too bright are you?" How is that being helpful?

I see the law says "all fish must be immediately released." Well...from what Elkchsr says, he did release them immediately. Whether removing the fish from the water is actually against the law, or just something that is recommended, is up for interpretation. Oh, and how the heck are you guys seeing dirt on one of the fish? Did you magnify the picture or do you have much better eyes than I do?

Maybe Elkchsr could have been a little more careful, but then how do we know? We weren't there. And like I said, if you want to point out that a little more care could be taken when handling endangered species, why not do it in a PM? What's the reason for trying to ream the guy a new a$$hole? And what's with all the insults and name calling when all he did was post some nice pictures? Not that it's any of my business but that really was rude and totally uncalled for. Alright, enough said. I'm staying out of this one from now on. ;)
