Looking for a new head lamp ( Lost mine Turkey hunting) I had a petzel but I was not happy with how the batteries keep popping out and it would not stay closed. what would you recommend?

I've got a 3 LED clip-on deal. As usual -I've forgotten who makes it, but it clips onto the bill of my hat, doesn't look like something from outerspace, is really light and doesn't get in the way. My only trouble is remembering to pull it out of my pack and put it on. I usually wind up using the mini-mite flashlight that's on my belt.
I'll let you know who makes it if I remember to take a look. Pretty handy little item.

A good cheap one to have around for spares are the ones made by Rayovac with the three different bulbs; led, incandecent, red. I've picked 'em up at WalMart for around $10.

I love the Petzl can't go wrong. I had one that kept opening up but I have 2 or 3 others that are great... except I keep loosing them ;)

I bought a little Petzel Tika, has 3-4 LED's and runs on 3 AAA. So far its the best $30 I've spent.

The ones Dave is talking about work great and can be found at walmart. They also make a blacklight one that is awsome for fishing at night as it makes the line glow so you can see it. I also have a cyclops (sp) it uses the 3 volts like a sure fire and is really bright. I like them both. LIL

that's the one I had and it will not stay closed, it keeps popping open. I went to Walmark and bought one for 14 bucks and it is brighter then anything I have ever used but I question the quality of it.

YOu obviously had a faulty one. Mine get's used and abused and never pops open. I've had it on all night 2 nights ago, and 3 hours last night.

Petzl Tikka Plus

That is the kind I tried to buy from Cabelas on Monday. I received one of their Bargain Cave things in the mail showing that headlamp for $24.99. I logged on as soon as I got home from the Post Office to place an order and they were all sold out.

Princton tec aurora is the best. Smalll and compact, battery door stays shut, and the thing has an electronic switch that has 3 modes of dimming. For doing most things around camp the lowest dimmed setting is all you need and that makes the batteries last a looooong time so you have plenty of battery to use when needed. Also has a hinged mount to tilt it where you need the light and that is really a must in my book for doing hand work like cooking or capeing. The Putzl cannot do that.

+1 on the fag statement...er...guy.

Kinda funny, I have had the Tikka Plus for a couple years, but couldn't find it when I left Canada two weeks ago. Crap, guess I am going to have to break down and get another one.

Just a little bit ago I pulled my camo out of the washing machine and into the drier. As I was checking posts I heard some loud crap coming from the drier. Low and behold, there is a Petzl getting dizzy. Just for shits I turned it on, but not expecting much. Sweet, light on. Two thumbs up for the Tikka Plus.

Downside is it has been throught the washer with detergent. Now I suppose I had to get some of that UV Killer Washer.

I've been using a Black Diamond (with a headband) for several years; very long battery life, great LEDs and waterproof to boot. You can adjust the direction the light shines and I can say I've never had any problems with it (knock on wood).

I've got a Black Diamond Supernova, although I don't think they make the specific one anymore. Great piece of equipment, used it extensively on last years elk with no problems.
