His place in the draft is a direct result of his poor measurables. Which NFL teams buy in to time and time again, even though history shows that as a metric they are not very good predictors in determining the value of a player down the road. Sure, there are certainly some cases where the best atheletes prosper, but perhaps more important are decision making and body control, not oxygenated 40 speed.
Jerry Rice ran a 4.6, the same as 300 pound Defensive End Reggie White.
Larry Fitzgerald ran a 4.63.
You certainly have to be in the realm of those you'll be competing against, and I would say Michael Sam is. He ran a 4.73 40 on his pro day, and the NFL average for LBs is around 4.65. We'll see how his college skills translate.
The absolute crapshoot that is the NFL draft historically shows that NFL teams haven't a clue what they are doing. That's why every year we see late rounders and undrafted FAs killing it on the field.
