In the mountains,

1. There are elk in every drainage and on every hill.
2. It must rain 10 times daily
3. It must hail at least once a day. Three times today, and it’s not even noon!
4. Grouse are WAAAY more cagey in MN than they are here, come on @Big Fin
5. There are so many elk. You could blindly throw a rock and hit an elk! They hardly spook, and if they do, they just come right back again.

Everything must change come September. Or, don’t believe everything you read on the internet about MT elk. Who knows…

Back to planning my MT spring bear tag soup recipe.

I was curious where you were seeing all these elk until I read this sentence 😂 then I realized I see elk all the time in the spring too where in the fall it's completely empty of life.

I hope it was still a fantastic time minus the rain and not getting a bear.

Never have hunted in Montana.

Worked forest surveys for a couple of months south of Sula and another couple west of Superior.

Awesome country!

I had a fantastic time in MT, and I can’t wait to plan another trip there. My tongue-in-cheek list was just a few unexpected observations from a small sample size of days in a single area (not Rock Creek).

On a more serious note, Montana elk hunters really deserve better. If the animals didn’t get pounded for months on end by unlimited OTC hunters, I can imagine a lot of those elk would stay on public and everyone could have a quality hunting experience.
