This thread will serve as a running collection of the season’s adventures, which began in Kootenai County, in the Big Sky. Our maiden voyage entailed getting mildly lost in a maze of roads, getting stung in the mouth by a hornet, and shooting ruffed grouse out of a tree. This hunt was done just a week shy of 6 months of age. Finn is not solid on point yet, but is showing a very good nose and is not just running willy nilly and busting birds. We are close.

Nicely done!! Thanks for sharing! I will say though, it's making me jealous. Not sure when/where/how often I'll be getting out with Hank this year.

I listen to the Hunting Dog Podcast quite a bit, and they are always talking about ruffed grouse hunting. It got me to thinking how much fun it would be to do more of it. I had no idea there was such good ruffed grouse hunting so close.

Do the best you can with Hank, he'll forgive you. :)

Another day in the grouse woods yielded multiple hornet stings for both of us, no shots, two wild flushes, and some really solid effort at pointing. Finn slammed so hard on point once that I was dumbfounded there wasn’t a bird there. Ruffies are tough on pointers, let alone pups.

Great looking dog.
The sleeping position is classic...mine is on the couch upside down as I type.
Some pics allude to a large frame, others not so.
How much does Finn weigh?

great pics! Looks like Finn is getting a fill for the job factor as well as the fun side!

How did Finn and the cat interact?

He weighs about 40 pounds right now. I am expecting another growth spurt here in the next month or so, probably top out around 60 pounds.

A short trip to a local spot I hadn’t hunted in several years. Put up about a dozen birds. Finn is maddeningly close to solid pointing.

Great looking pup you got there JLS. Glad to see you are getting him out as often as you are. He will be holding rock solid before you know it.
