The technological assault on hunting marches on but it’s not all bad news. Utah and Arizona are taking some great steps.

“AZ Game and Fish Commission voted unanimously to ban the use of crossbows during archery season starting in 2026. The "illegal" use of crossbows is having a major impact on trophy bull elk numbers throughout the state. "Illegal" means permits for disabilities were being issued for individuals without disabilities. Permits for disabilities had increased 1700% in just the last 3 years”

Just the fact they were able to say that it has a different effect is a win.

Are you saying this a bad move?
Likely a knee-jerk ideological reaction to any comment regarding a "government" decision at any level. Uncontrollable reaction to criticize the "gubment" at any opportunity ... logical, rational or not. Stretching the elasticity of "crossbows" to "natural resources". Pathetic, but unfortunately it's prevalent. Try to view it as absurdly humorous.

I just wasn't sure what he meant. I'll wait til he answers, thanks. Obviously that knee jerk ideological government comment goes both ways. Which is equally humorous.

I don't care if an agency thinks crossbows are part of archery, but I think crossbows during archery is a low T move. But this last part is f'n weak AF. Imagine faking a disability to get a Dr's note to crossbow hunt?!?!?!?!?! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I believe that the only time exemptions during archery should be given is when archery is the ONLY regular season. If there is a regular crossbow/firearm season, there should be no exceptions whatsoever during archery season, disability or not.

Couldn't agree more our archery season is over 100 days. If you want to hunt with a crossbow that's fine. You shouldn't get the full season though it should be separate.

As long as you have an opportunity to hunt. Your disability shouldn't be an excuse to hunt every season with special rules.

Some people have to choose one type of weapon to hunt with because of low income. Does it mean we should allow them to hunt during archery with a rifle because of wealth inequality? Obviously, no. I kind of see this being a parallel issue; if you can't hunt with a bow, but can with a crossbow or rifle, and there is an open rifle season, there's your chance to hunt!

I don’t know that people are faking disabilities necessarily. It's just that the bar for something qualifying as a disability is extremely low. Im fine with them if someone is truly disabled, otherwise I think crossbows should only be legal during gun season, or not at all.

Sort of one in the same, no?

The older I get the more I feel archery season should be stick and string only no wheels allowed and muzzleloader should be no scope, side locks only. This is coming from a guy who hunts with a compound and a in-line. Although just got my first Hawken and don't plan on looking back.

Same and if they changed it to stick and string, I'd drop it tomorrow and be at the bow shop picking up a recurve.

No, because currently people feel like they are operating within the rules so they don’t see anything wrong with it.

If you had to fake being paralyzed to get a permit I think there would be a few less participants.

Baseline is people will bend every rule to gain some personal advantage. The irony of making something like this only for the "truly disabled" is it takes as much governmental resources to ensure compliance, and even then people will try to get around it.
True. What's the alternative a free for all?
