I got drawn for a State Park deer reduction hunt at Winamac State Park that took place Monday and Tuesday of this week (on these hunts you are allowed 3 deer and one can be antlered and do not count against your regular season limits. . ."freebies") My Dad, best friend, and I headed up to take a look around on Sunday afternoon, we had rented a cabin to stay in for the 2 nights we would be there. (no heat but had electricty) We found a few good places we thought held some promise, but, on these hunts you never know what the dawn will bring or who will be sitting where etc. Monday morning @ 5:30am we checked in and started hiking to our spots in a balmy 12 degrees with about an inch of snow on the ground.. . couldn't have asked for better conditions. At first light I had some does come in behind me ( before legal time) so they got a pass. . .20 minutes later shots were being fired from the direction they went and I assumed they were dead or long gone. I hadn't seen the first hunter though and felt lucky for that. . .I'm thinking about moving to a better vantage point around 8am. .but decided to sit for 10 min then move. . .ended up being a great call on my part. . .at 40 yds this guy steps out and I put one through his chest. . .40yds and hes down. It was a great trip regardless, love hanging out with Dad and Wes, but the deer did make it a little better!
