Sorry, gotta vent a bit, Have a brother-in-law that beleives in archery a shot in the rump is ethical because it will cut the femoral artery. And is passing this along to his kids. Am I alone on this thinking it's an unethical shot??

WTH? Where did he find this info? Sorry, but just chaps my chaps. So during rifle he would would one in the arse? Sorry for the rant, but I am old.

I'm with idnative, where does one learn such stupidity?! The femoral artery is not very big, maybe a centimeter at most.

That artery is what,..maybe the diameter of your thumb...?? and he's a good enough shot to think he's going to hit that artery vs, waiting for a shot at lungs the size of basketballs??? you had better have a little chat with his kids while he's gone to the fridge to get more beer!

Plenty of room to miss the femoral artery in an area the size of a deers hindquarter.

Pretty ordinary knowledge of anatomy and understanding of ethical shot placement using archery equipment if he believes this to be a valid aiming point for archery harvest of animals.

shoot him in the azz. and when you miss the femoral artery, ask him how ethical of a shot it was. should solve the problem.

When I took my bowhunter ed class, this was definitely not an ethical shot. Maybe he needs to be reminded of it?

You're right. That is not an ethical or lethal shot (normally). It is true, the femoral artery does run down the back of the rump, but it is not a place to aim. The heart/lung area is a much larger target (and you know exactly where it's at) and much more lethal.

The source is one guy named Chuck Adams.

In the late 80's and early 90's he published several writings on the virtues of a hind quarter shot. His experience was that it was deadly, even when the femoral artery wasn't hit.

I only took the shot once on a wounded animal. After I trailed a paunch-shot buck to his bed, I found him still alive and as he hunched away I stuck him squarely in the quarter. He walked 10 yards, laid down and was dead within a couple minutes.

I'd never take the shot otherwise.

That is someone who is trying to rationalize "poke and hope."

Hitting the femoral artery is luck. Other vital areas on an animal are easily identifiable when looking at the exterior of the animal. (Behind the front leg). The femoral artery is buried in the hind quarters. When aiming and if you miss the lungs, you can still hit the liver or heart if you are lower in the cavity. Miss the femoral artery and you are in guts no matter where you miss and animal will die slowly and minimal exterior blood.

I am not proud to call names, but if he is advocating this, he is a moron.

Seems this isn't a new topic on the web...

From the last article:
Where to Aim - Rear-end Shots

Bow: This is a shot all responsible bow hunters will pass up. The only major target in the rear quarters is the femoral artery, which is smaller than your little finger and extremely well protected by heavy leg and hip bones. Also, the hindquarters have very heavy muscle tissue which, together with the heavy bone structure and viscera, make it a long, questionable journey for an arrow to get up front to the vital organs of even a small deer.

The femoral certainly is fatal but it would be like trying to hit a dime. I agree it would not be ethical to teach anyone to take that shot.
