After work on Thursday, I drove 3.5hrs south to our place in So. Indiana. I didn't hear any gobbles, but did have a hen come by and roost about 50yds away. Friday, I didn't see or hear a turkey. But, I did get plenty wet. Being able to head back to the cabin and throw the clothes in the dryer sure beats wet tent camping.

Saturday morning I headed to the NW corner of our property just as light was breaking. About 1/2 up the hill I hear 2 then 3 gobblers, with a 4th off in the distance to the west. I slow my pace up as I could tell they were close. Another gobble-fest and I look up and spot 3 of them still on the roost 65yds away. Fearing I'd spook them if I tried to get setup on the ground, I just stepped behind a tree and kept an eye on them by peaking around. It was fun watching them light off everytime something made a noise. Dogs bark, they gobble. Goose honks, they gobble. Truck drives by on the road 100yds away, they gobble. After about 15mins they fly down and I give a couple of yelps. They moved towards me a bit and take turns strutting, but they didn't gobble. They start heading away and to my right towards the field I was trying to get to, so I shot one. I was back at the cabin and drinking coffee just after 7am...

Didn't weigh him, but I'd guess he's just north of 20#, had a 10.5" beard and spurs just over an inch.

Good looking Bird,Congrats.

It seems like all over the Country that having dirt under their feet is making their Gobbler not work.

Really cool that you were close enough to see them on the roost, and got to watch them tell the whole world that they are there, and the boss(es) of the woods. Smart too to make like an extra bump on the tree trunk , instead of scurrying around alerting them to your presence.
