I have been a serious turkey hunter for over 20 years but this year has been a special year as I was with my 8 year old son for his first turkey. My #1 goal this spring was for Drake to bag a tom. I have been letting him practice with my Mossberg 500 .410 pump. I could tell he was ready. My brother and his 11 year old son who has killed two turkeys and myself headed to the western part of my home state of Oklahoma. Having roosted several gobblers the evening before we went back to camp and crawled into our tent to get some sleep. The next morning we got our pop up ground blind in position and set out the hen decoy. We had 2 toms answering but they would not commit. Finally at around 10:00 a different tom popped over the hill at about 400 yards and was ready to play. The lonely tom quickly cut the distance as we were scrambling to get my son into position and get the .410 on the shooting sticks. The georgous Oklahoma Rio strutted for the hen decoy (a taxidermy stuffer i made) and put on a great show. The turkey was in range for quite awhile but Drake was looking down the barrel through the red dot scope waiting for the birds bright red head to aling with dot instead of just pointing the gun and shooting. The suspense was intense but finally Drake pulled the trigger and down went the tom at about 23 yards. It was great watching him with the adrenalin as he realized his first turkey was down. Who am i kidding, I had the shakes myself.
