Hey I'm new to this site just found it by doing a DIY search. Wondering if I could get some info on where to go for a DIY mule deer hunt not looking for your spots looking for info on where to try to get tags or where is the easiest to get tags. And how much. I'm from east Tn so where ever I go is gonna be a long haul prolly camp somewhere on public land if it is permitted for a week or so. Looking to go probably during rifle season. This is the first time I have ever done this so just trying to get some info on where would be easiest to get a buck tag. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

ID has OTC deer tags. Go on IDFG website and use their hunt planner.

Nebraska and Oklahoma have OTC tags and there are public areas that hold mule deer on the western side of each state.

You thinking archery or rifle? AZ has OTC archery mule deer. There are left overs in WY after the draw gets posted at the end of this month. Lots of options. Good luck.

Almost any state out west hold huntable DIY Mule Deer. Nevada & Colorado probably have the most units with the most amount of 180" type bucks. Montana & Wyoming are also good options. Arizona does not have a 10% cap on the units South of the Grand Canyon, but almost all of these units have a boat load of hunters during the general seasons. The Strip & Kaibab units hold GIANT bucks, but you can expect to invest MONEY & a long wait time for those tags.

The Navajo Nation offers the only tribal land DIY Mule Deer Hunts in Arizona. Permit fee is $1,200 for the general season, but these units are not classified as trophy units. The Trophy Units are guided only & more expensive. You must apply & it closes tomorrow. They have a 10% cap on Non-Tribal member permits.

Good luck!

Well I like the idea of wyoming how close or is it close antelope and mule deer season in Wyoming I have done a little research on Wyoming not much everyone I have talk to tells me a lot of the public land you half to be careful cause you might be on private property.

Surprisingly Oklahoma has quite a bit of public land all across the state. Here is a link to the state public land information.

Nebraska has some nice NF land in the western half of the state as well as various WMA's and national grassland where you can find mule deer.

If you cant secure a leftover Wyoming tag, or a landowner tag domewhere else, I'd think Idaho or Nebraska would be your best bet for otc tags. my 2 cents.

There will be leftover tags in Region Y in Wyoming that will go on sale on July 6th. Just about the entire western side of Y is public land from the National Forest in the northern part to all the BLM in the southern area. Just get a good map of the area, buy a tag and Conservation Stamp on the net when they go on sale, and then go out and have fun. It's all beautiful country up and down the entire Bighorn Mountains area witha decent chance to shoot a mulie or a whitetail in a lot of the areas.

Yep, and most of the areas you can take a buck of either sex with your tag. They also have separate whitetail tags in a lot of the areas where they are prevalent and the seasons are usually later than the mulie tags.

If I were you,I'd get a Wy. left over tag. With that said, I've never hunted Idaho so I don't know what they have to offer.I may be able to get you some decent imfo on a Y tag hunt

Nevada has some good tags you can get with little or no points. You have a very good chance at a 160" type Mule deer in many of the zones if you can get info on where to go. You also have a very good chance in some zones of a 180" and higher type buck depending on the year and your time you are willing to put in.

When is the rifle season in Wy normally for mule deer and antelope? Do most people get a motel in the nearest town? What about checking in the animal? If you are pretty far back in there what are the terms of quarreling the animal and checking it in?

I'm quite certain all of your questions could be easily answered just by going to their website or you could call and request a reg book...

What CabinFever said!!! Go onto the F&G website and read everything they have in it pertaining to any of your questions and after you've done that come back for any other help you need.
