74 years ago today Allied forces put boots into France that started the defeat of the Nazi regime.

Over 9,000 Allied troops died.

The world was changed forever due to their efforts.

Lest we forget.

Lest we forget.

Thanks for the post, T Bone.

The magnitude of that event... The beaches, the courage beyond courage to continue the advance is beyond measure!

Lest we forget.

It is a haunting, special place, indeed. My sons Boy Scout troop had the opportunity to actually camp at the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach several years ago. My oldest was actually awarded his Eagle Badge at a special ceremony on a wall overlooking the Cemetery and the Beach. Watching the boys play in the sands of Omaha, for me, brought home the significance of what happened there so many years before. The Scouts also participated in the flag raising and retirement ceremonies each of the days we were there. One evening after the retirement ceremony, a young French woman came up to me and asked if the Scouts performed that ceremony everyday. When I told her, "No, we were only visiting". She said, "That is too bad. That was really beautiful."

This was 14 years ago (60th anniversary)...had the chance to visit while I was stationed at the US Consulate in Frankfurt.

The next day a few of us were at a bar in Sainte-Mere-Eglise and were all in uniform...we had a French family walk up to our table, set down several pitchers of beer, and say "Thank you"...still gives me chills

My Wife and Daughter are at Normandy today. I am looking forward to their report.

Two things I noticed
- lots of American, British, and Canadian flags being flown from peoples' yards
- the churches have lots of stained glass windows depicting soldiers rather than the typical designs with Virgin Mary and Saints

I've always been interested in military and wartime history and have read many books on WWII. What those guys did that day on the beaches of Normandy is miraculous. The world was on the brink of suffering a total disaster with the invasion, and probably would have, if it wasn't for sheer will and determination. The stories of guys like Norman Cota have always intrigued me. Thankful for the "Greatest Generation"

I follow @82ndABVDiv on Twitter and they just finished a "live" recap of the events leading up to and the first 20 hours or so of the invasion.

Worth the time to go through.

Amazing time in history.

My dad was 505 82nd. I have tried to get him to go back and he said he never will. Yesterday I was inside the USS Bowfin in Pearl Harbor. What a privilege it was. It’s amazing how much tonnage that submarine sunk in 9 combat tours. It’s a great read if someone wants to read up on a submarine that was tagged ‘The Avenger of Pearl Harbor ‘.
My dad still wears his Wings so proudly.
