You have won a permit for DG472

Crown Mt that's a pretty good tag. Who are you going with?

I have talked with Brian Peterson. I don't know whomelse might have that unit. I would like to talk to other potential outfitters as well, but he sounded to be very good.

Looks like I am going to crack a bottle of wine for tonight. Screw the cow elk, I will try them next week instead.

So are you going to be a candy a$$ and fly into "shotgun" lake or you going to do it like a Kodiakan and hike in from the salt???

Just kidding, I almost flew into that lake for my 471 hunt but it was $350 to fly into salt and $750 to fly into the lake. I will say that extra $400 was sounding like chump chage when I was getting eaten alive by black flies busting through alders and head-high grass going straight up a dang mt in the rain. Not to mention we had to hump all that meat back out to the salt, luckily that day was nice and sunny.

Maybe I ain't so mad I didn't draw.... hump
You'll have a good hunt, when are you planning on going? The goats here never get the real short hair like other places. Mine was shot on Labor day weekend and looks better than some I've seen from other places shot in the end of Oct.

Too many thoughts. Hair is most important to me. I have a 9.25" on my wall with good hair. I won't turn down a 10"er, but an 8"er and a great experience will fulfill what I am hoping to find. I hope hunt to after duck season opens, but I need to make sure weather won't be much of a risk that time of year.

Weather is a risk all times of the year, but as a rule the later you go the better your chances are for getting stuck, either in Kodiak or on the Mt. I think 2 years ago there were a couple guys that got stuck up there for 7 days past their pickup in Oct. Only reason I remember it is because they hit their lperb to get the CG to rescue them. Then they got mad because the Cg wouldn't haul their stuff out for them.
Ducks open Oct 8 and of course deer will be open. Good time of year to get the Harlequins and a few scoters around. We'll have to hook up when you come through. As usual there is always my 6-pack toll for anyone coming through Kodiak (Moosie's toll is now a case but that's just because I reserve the right to raise or lower my fees as I see fit). :)

Miller:

Congrats to you. You lookin' to start a goat musuem up in Havre?

That would beat the sheep (live, scared, and domestic) museum my buddy has in Miles City.

I hope you have a great hunt.

No worries, beer will be brought for toll.:D Obviously, lots of planning yet to do, but what are your thoughts on my opps with a bow in that unit?

Would be a treat if I can draw UT this year too.:D Not much of a museum yet, but I do have you to thank for the one that is on my wall. Without your help when I first moved to MT, this naive SD boy would have never made it very far up the mountain.

A bow is do able. I shot mine at 40 yards, but we also sat right above them for about 3 or 4 minutes at 25 yards before they bolted. It would have been easy to sneak up and stand up at about 15 yards and pop one. Only thing was we could only see parts of them and weren't sure they were billies at the time. My buddy shot a 9" billy with his bow a couple years ago. If your going with a bow you might want to consider taking some whites. He actually used the hide off his buddies goat that they had shot a few hours earlier to sneak up on the one he arrowed.
I'd say as long as the guide has a decent rifle try it with a bow and if it don't work out shoot one with his rifle. It'd be pretty easy to take a P&Y billy up in there. If you want numbers and such give John Crea a call at F&G. He's the bio and bowhunts a lot too. (907)486-1880

Thanks for the info, I will contact Crea for some more insight. I have a case to haul both my bow and rifle, so no worries there. I am sure I can borrow a shotgun for birds if the timing works out.

I just think the bow thing would be pretty cool if it is an opportunity. PY doesn't do anything for me, just the bow harvest.

The only downside of this drawing is it is really affecting my drawing for a few other states. BC bears in June and AK goats in Oct. Looks like annual leave and $$$ will be hit pretty hard this year. I was really hoping to chase deer in CO this year and lope with Schmalts and another guy in WY, I guess they will be on hold:D Good trade.;)

Congratulations, Miller. Hope H&R gave you a lot of money. ;)

BTW, I met John Crea when I had two days to wander around Kodiak while waiting for a flight out. He was very helpful once he warmed up to us.

Yeah John can be a little stand offish at first, but he's a decent guy. I guess I I don't blame him since he gets bombarded daily with people trying to pick his brain. I did an elk hunt a few years back over on Afognak and he was camped down the lake about a mile from us. No elk for any of us, but he always asks how my seasons going, etc when I run into him now. My advice is if he ain't much for talking the first time you call just wait a few weeks and call back. If you catch him on the right day he's a gold mine of info.
I misspelled his name too its Crye pronounced Cry.

Congrats Miller! I kicked back a few Boulevard Pale Ales before finding out the results tonight. I don't think I need anymore to drink, but here is to us...errr, our draws. Congrats again bud.

Sheep Nazi: NO TAG FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Little brother drew the late 14c tag.

Don't be esscared. Do it with the bow, you already have one goat.

Congrats!! Stop by the 'Rose for me... ;) If you go quasi early, are you planning on picking up a deer tag or two?

Go later in the season and grab a handful of deer tags.

miller i'd take the bow with me for sure if thats what you wanna try , like TB said as long as guide has a gun, which i'm sure he would, you can use that as a back up in the bow situation don't work out.
but on those goats a little patience and you should be able to close the gap really well. terrian is everything, goats are easy to stalk if the ground lays right. As TB posted earlier he was on them at 25 yards for a while, they aren't like sheep thats for sure.

I drew DS139 and got three clients that drew DG 478 and 479. gonna be a fun year...
