This year I’m planning to visit idaho to hunt and my wife is looking to join me early Oct to explore SLC - Zion - Las Vagas - Grand Canyon - Telluride - Denver. I’m happy with the itinerary but any suggested interesting spots along the way would be great. But I’m really looking for recommendations on a camper / van hire. Needs to be a decent size with cooker but it’s only the two of us travelling. Planning on staying in campgrounds mostly. Thanks.

This is a national outfit. I have never used but a few friends have and it is as advertised. It won't be cheap :) This location in ID.

I'm not help at all on campers...

I'd do

SLC straight to Vegas

Vegas -> Zion - Capital Reef-> Canyon lands (needles district, camp at squaw flat), then take the south route to Cortez, Telluride, crested butte (camp on kebler pass), then down to Great Sand Dunes National Park, then up to Denver.

If in Vegas go here and be hungry! Eating there is my top memory from our trip.

That route looks awesome! Will update my plan. Now to see if I can work in a bear tag on my way up to ID.

I would opt for something with as low a profile going down the road as you can get. Wind blows out here and high profile vehicles can have a hard time , we have road closures to light weight high profile vehicles all the time.
Lower profile will save on fuel costs as well, head winds eat fuel.

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I ended up booking a car rather than a camper, decided I’d like a mix of hotels (including Trump International in Vegas which should be interesting), tent camping and AIRBNB.

I updated my planned route to - Vegas -> Zion -> Capital Reef -> Telluride -> Great Sand Dunes National Park -> Salida -> Denver. If anyone has any suggested places to visit along this route please let me know.

Since you are driving past it, make sure to atleast make a quick stop in Bryce NP. You could also do Hells Backbone if you have the time. Its between Bryce and Capitol Reef. It's an Alternate route, but it would add approximately 2-3 hours to your trip.

A little late to the party, but if you are including camping, you could check out Overland vehicle rentals from Vegas. They are built 4x4 vehicles with roof top tents and include camping gear. Down side is restricted mileage.

On your way to Telluride swing into Ouray and grab dinner and a beer at Ouray Brewing then straight over to the hot springs for a soak and to watch the goats on the canyon walls. Then camp at Amphitheater Campground for an awsome evening view. Love that Town.

Sounds awesome! Thanks.

I booked into Trump International in Las Vegas. Has anyone stayed there with a rifle?

They told me it should be fine to check in with a rifle but they also won’t say what the ‘security procedure’ was. I assume they lock the rifle in a safe but they wouldn’t confirm this.

I have never had to do anything but take my weapon to my room in any hotel in the US.

Good to hear SFC. I guess I was a little paranoid as the front desk people asked me to phone the hotel security person, which I did, and they couldnt really confirm the arrangements. But thanks for your rely!

Mt. Princeton Hot Springs between Salida and Buena Vista, and the South Fork/Creede area will be beautiful that time of year

Arches & Canyonlands should be on that itenerary. As should Monument Valley & Valley of the Gods. A bit out of the way, but in line with the trip laid out so far.
