I just read my latest Consevation Connection News letter, a publication put out by all the FNAWS Chapters. There was some interesting articles in reguards to the California sheep program and the issuance of the second auction tag. California FNAWS did indeed get an additional auction tag made available due to the below story. The purchaser was Butch Kuflak, California land developer, for $85,000. Over the years Butch has purchased a lot of sheep auction tags (name sound familiar IT?) I will see if I can locate more articles discusing this. Tell me what you think?

CA FNAWS PROJECT SCORES BIG!

Since the inception of CA FNAWS, the chapter has been interested in assisting the California Department of Fish and Game by improving their ability to better assess and manage the wild sheep populations that reside within the state. With the state’s current fiscal problems, our support of DFG’s wild sheep management has become even more important.

One area of interest to us has been to explore the possibilities that there might be thriving, huntable sheep populations in areas in which hunts have not previously existed. One such area is the White Mountains, near Bishop. Based upon information we had garnered from DFG and other sources, the CA FNAWS board authorized funding for a survey. We had hoped to find up to 200 head in the unit. In fact, as the following article by Cody Schroeder shows, we now have strong evidence that there are over 300 sheep in this herd!

This fabulous result means two things. First, there is clearly a thriving sheep herd in the White Mountains. Second, it means that there is great promise for the opening of the White Mountains as a new hunt unit in the state! In fact, we would not be at all surprised if this survey results in multiple public tags!

But wait! The news gets even better! This past season, there was only one sheep tag available for auction. Using the formula required by DFG, had there been just one more public tag, an additional auction tag would have been available. Thus, if our success in the Whites nets even one more sheep tag for next year’s draw, a second auction tag will be available. And that tag, ladies in gentlemen, will be awarded to CA FNAWS for auction at our banquet on February 5, 2005!

I personally think it is a great thing for the game departments to auction off certain tags to the highest bidder, 85K supplants a lot of tags that don't have to be purchased and the game dept gets the benefits of more money in their coffers...

Thanks.. :)

Russ,

CA FNAWS got the $85,000, not the Game Dept. But if CA FNAWS did not spend the up front money and do the sheep survey, then there would have been no tags from this herd issued. I believe the results of the survey allowed for 3 tags, one being an auction tag. Is this good or bad?

Ahhh...

I see, didn't read close enough to where every thing was being directed.. My bad...

I would think if it is a good group and the money is being well spent on wildlife, no matter if the game dept gets to play with the $$$ first or not, is a good thing.
