I received a voice mail this morning from C. L. Smith of GEO-Terra,
Inc. (a
contractor currently doing roadside brushing maintenance for DNR in
this
region)
advising that four explosive devices have been found on forest road
gates
in the
last week - 2 on Weyerhaeuser gates and 2 on Longview Fibre gates. He
did
not
specify the location, but I took his comments to mean that the devices
were
found within our region. He describes the bombs as being made of PVC
plastic
with a mercury triggering device. They have apparently been located in
places
on the gates not limited to the lock boxes, i.e. parts of the gate that
would
cause the mercury trigger to activate when the gate is swung open. Mr.
Smith
commented that the FBI was getting involved in the investigation.
It seems unusual to me for this many rather sophisticated devices to
appear
in
a matter of days. Possibly the work of some eco-terror group? It
would
seem
prudent for our folks to assume that there are other devices not yet
found
and
to exercise great caution when opening these gates. I will talk to Mr.
Smith
and see if I can gather any more information. Maybe Floyd could
contact
the
security offices of these companies to gather more info.
