I am thinking of a turkey hunt in the spring in the Wyoming black Hills. Anyone hunt turkey in the forest ? This is all new to me.Looks like a fun trip.
I have hunted around the Hill City area. This area holds the largest population of birds. A few years ago numbers were down due to that blizzard and increased lion numbers. Drive the back roads and call. If you hear something go out and get them. Lots of area to hunt. If it snows .... hunt low. PM me for any info.
Rooster,
Turkeys are fun and seem to have good numbers in the last few years in the hills on the Wyoming side. There are two good campgrounds that will put you in close to the hunting areas if you choose to go that route. Good hotels in the towns close by too. The hunting pressure is noticeable but not too much as in some areas in the area. PM me with specific questions
I lived in the Hills on the SD side and chased turkey quite a bit in that area. You'll find birds on the Nat'l Forest land and hanging around pastures. They like the logging roads that run along ridge tops for strutting areas. Can be quite a bit of snow (or none at all) in the Hills in mid-April so I'd suggest hunting the middle to later half of the season, or hunt lower elevation areas. Then again, late season is no guarantee for nice weather. I hunted in snow every week of that season. Get a Black Hills Nat'l Forest map, it'll help out a bunch.
I used to be the Archaeologist in the Northern Hills Ranger District of the Black Hills NF. Would see turkeys all the time near the small community of Nemo. Cabin lodging is available there as well.
If you have any other questions concerning the Hills, feel free to ask.
