Ten minnowsBosque Farms-AP) -- The Rio Grande has dried out in a 23-mile stretch between Isleta Pueblo and Elephant Butte, and biologists are working on what’s become an annual event.
US Fish and Wildlife Service biologists have been working seven days a week for a month, trying to rescue endangered Rio Grande silvery minnows stranded in isolated pools.
As of late last week, they had rescued ten silvery minnows. Eight of the fish survived the trip to the Albuquerque Biological Park. That’s where rescued minnows are kept and reproduce until they can be put back in the river when its flows return.
Last year, about 70 miles of river dried out. The Fish and Wildlife Service saved 713 minnows south of Isleta between mid-June and early October.
I think this is just silly and a waste of time and money.
